Treatment Summary
Mupirocin is a naturally occurring antibiotic produced by fermentation of the Pseudomonas fluorescens bacteria. It works by blocking protein synthesis in bacteria and is effective against many types of gram-positive bacteria and some gram-negative bacteria. It does not have cross-resistance with other types of antibiotics, making it a useful and safe treatment option. Mupirocin is only available in topical formulations and is used to treat skin conditions such as impetigo caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes, as well as traumatic skin lesions caused by these bacteria. It may also be

Effectiveness
How Mupirocin Affects Patients
Mupirocin is an antibiotic used to fight certain bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. It works by blocking the bacteria's ability to make proteins, which are necessary for survival. Studies have found that it has a high success rate of 94 to 98% when treating impetigo, as well as a 90% success rate when treating skin infections. Mupirocin can become resistant to the bacteria, with some reports of resistance as high as 81%. This resistance is more common in bacteria that are already resistant to other antibiotics, and can be caused by a modified isoleu
How Mupirocin works in the body
Mupirocin works by attaching to a special enzyme that helps create proteins and RNA in bacteria. By blocking this enzyme, it stops the bacteria from making new proteins and RNA. This usually stops the bacteria from reproducing, although with prolonged exposure, it can be lethal.
When to interrupt dosage
The suggested dosage of Mupirocin is contingent upon the determined condition, such as Communicable Diseases, Bacterial Infections and staphylococcus aurea colonization of the nasal passage. The amount of dosage is subject to the technique of delivery (e.g. Ointment or Cream) specified in the table beneath.

Mupirocin Toxicity & Overdose Risk
The highest dose of mupirocin found to be non-toxic in rats is 5000mg/kg. Tests have not shown any link between mupirocin and cancer. Animal and bacterial studies have also not shown any connection to genetic damage. Reproduction studies in rats have not found any impact on fertility. Mupirocin has been found in human milk, so pregnant women should use it with caution. Clinical trials have shown that mupirocin is safe for use in children ages two months to sixteen years.

"No, mupirocin is not the same as Neosporin."
Answered by AI
What kind of antibiotic is mupirocin?
"Mupirocin binds reversibly to bacterial isoleucyl-transfer RNA synthetase, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis. Mupirocin, which was formerly called pseudomonic acid A, is a topical antibiotic that is being researched for the treatment of impetigo and other superficial primary and secondary skin infections. Mupirocin (Bactroban, Beecham Laboratories) is currently formulated as a 2% ointment in a water-miscible polyethylene glycol base. Mupirocin binds reversibly to bacterial isoleucyl-transfer RNA synthetase, which inhibits protein synthesis."
