How Micronor Affects Patients
Norethisterone is a medication taken orally as a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone. It is used as birth control or to treat other hormone-related conditions like menopause symptoms or endometriosis. Norethisterone works by changing cervical and endometrial function, as well as blocking certain hormones from being released from the pituitary gland that are needed for egg development and ovulation. Taking norethisterone, as with other hormonal contraceptives, may slightly increase the risk of breast cancer. Patients should be made aware of this risk and should perform regular self-examinations to check for
How Micronor works in the body
Norethisterone works by changing cells in the reproductive tract, breast, pituitary, hypothalamus, skeletal tissue, and central nervous system. It makes the cervical mucous thicker and harder for sperm to move through. It also changes the endometrium in a way that makes it difficult for a fertilized egg to attach and grow. Norethisterone also negatively affects the hormones released by the hypothalamus and pituitary, which prevents ovulation and the development of the corpus luteum. In hormone replacement therapy for menopausal women, norethisterone is used to prevent the growth of the endomet
