Neomycin is an antibiotic drug used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It is made up of three components, Neomycin A, B, and C. Neomycin B and C are the active components, while Neomycin A acts as a connector between the two. The drug works by binding to bacterial ribosomes and blocking their ability to make proteins, which is necessary for their survival. Neomycin sulfate is the most commonly used form of the drug and is available in oral solutions as well as otic and ophthalmic preparations. It can also be found in topical products over-the-counter.

How Maxitrol Affects Patients

Neomycin is a medication that stops bacteria from making proteins, which can prevent the growth and survival of certain types of bacteria. After taking it orally, it usually stays in the body for up to 72 hours and can reduce the amount of bacteria that produce ammonia. Neomycin is effective against both gram positive and gram negative bacteria, including the common types of E. coli found in the colon, as well as certain types of Klebsiella and Proteus. In some cases, the bacteria may become resistant to neomycin, but it has no effect on fungi or some protozoa.

How Maxitrol works in the body

Neomycin is an antibiotic that stops bacteria from making proteins. It does this by binding to the ribosomes of the bacteria, disrupting their ability to build proteins from mRNA. This prevents the bacteria from growing and multiplying.

Maxitrol Toxicity & Overdose Risk

Neomycin has been found to be toxic in mice when given orally, with a dose of over 8g/kg. The toxic doses in rats and mice when given through the skin are 200mg/kg and 190mg/kg, respectively. When given through the abdomen, the toxic dose is 305mg/kg in mice. In humans, the toxic dose for women is 12600mg/kg over 7 days. It is unlikely that acute overdosage will occur due to the low absorption rate of neomycin. However, it is important to avoid long-term use as it can lead to neurotoxicity, ototoxicity
