Treatment Summary

Drospirenone is a synthetic hormone used in combination with Ethinyl estradiol and Estetrol for birth control pills. It can also be used to treat acne and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). There have been concerns about an increased risk of venous thromboembolism associated with its use, but the FDA concluded that the risk remains unclear as studies have been conflicting. However, the risk is still lower than the risk of this condition during pregnancy or after childbirth.

How Loryna Affects Patients

Drospirenone is a contraceptive medication used to prevent pregnancy. It works by blocking the ovulation process, and can also help improve acne and hirsutism. Taking drospirenone with ethinyl estradiol has been shown to be beneficial to the plasma lipid profile. It is similar to natural progesterone, and may cause fewer side effects such as breast tenderness and mood swings. However, taking drospirenone increases the risk of venous thromboembolism and cardiovascular events, especially in smokers and women aged 35 or older. It also increases the risk of hyperkalemia, so patients at

How Loryna works in the body

Drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol work together to prevent pregnancy. They stop the release of hormones that cause ovulation and make changes to the cervical mucus, making it harder for sperm to travel. Drospirenone also has anti-mineralocorticoid activity, blocking aldosterone receptors and increasing sodium and water excretion. It also has anti-androgenic activity, blocking the binding of DHT to its receptor and preventing androgen synthesis in the ovaries, which helps treat acne and hirsutism. Finally, drospirenone may decrease the level of edema in sebaceous

Loryna for Birth Control

This drug has some downsides—slight weight gain and decreased interest in sex—but the upsides (tremendous positive impact on my mood, effectiveness in preventing pregnancy, improvement to my skin) outweigh them. I feel so much better since taking this; it's really helped with my PMS, too.

Loryna for Acne

I was really nervous about starting this birth control after reading some of the reviews online. I'm so glad I decided to go ahead with it anyway. It's been great for my acne, and I haven't gained any weight. It works just as well as any other birth control pill would.

Loryna for Acne

I've been on this medication for four months now, and I'm happy to say that it's cleared up my acne completely. The only downside is some hyperpigmentation, but that's a small price to pay for clear skin.

Loryna for Acne

I've been on Loryna for four years now and it's great. My acne cleared up within weeks, and though my sex drive dropped a bit, that was only if I missed a dose. Otherwise, no changes to my mood or body. I was also put on it for weight gain prevention and saw changes in appetite that eventually evened out. Plus, way less cramps than before! All things considered, this is the best birth control I've ever used.

Loryna for Birth Control

I was scared to try the pill because of all the horror stories I'd heard about it, but Loryna has been great for me so far. No acne, no weight gain, and my breasts have gotten bigger (which might explain my increased appetite). Overall, very happy with this experience.

Loryna for Birth Control

This medication helped me with cramps, but caused problems with my sex drive and weight. After a couple years on the meds, I realized that it was the actual reason I didn’t have a sex drive or why I was very moody.

Loryna for Disease of Ovaries with Cysts

Disappointed is right. It did help with my cycles and acne, but I gained weight while constantly bloated. My periods were also longer than normal. Beyond that, I felt really out of sorts on this pill; it made me feel irritable and upset all the time.

Loryna for Birth Control

I've only been taking this medication for three days, and it has already caused me a great deal of pain in my chest, nausea, and dizziness. I ended up having to go to the hospital.

Sculptra + Restylane for Post-Menopausal Skin Concerns

40 - 65
Female
Montreal, Canada

The post-menopausal state is marked by a sharp decline in estrogen, leading to significant structural and functional changes in the skin, including collagen loss, dryness, thinning, and reduced elasticity. To address these concerns, aesthetic injectables products such as Sculptra® Aesthetic (poly-L-lactic-acid \[PLLA- SCA\]) and Restylane Skinboosters®\[HASBV\] (small-particle hyaluronic acid - SP-HA) can be used. PLLA-SCA stimulates collagen production via cellular activation (biostimulator), gradually improving dermal structure. HASBV enhances hydration, elasticity, and skin texture when injected under the skin. Considering that hydration and laxity represent the primary aesthetic concerns in this patient population. Targeted treatment with SP-HA (HASBV) to improve hydration and PLLA-SCA to address laxity have been shown to produce significant clinical outcomes by directly addressing these key dermal deficiencies. This approach forms the basis of the current study.

Lidocaine for Pain Control in Birth Control

18 - 50
Female
La Jolla, CA

The goal of this research study is to learn more about how different uses of a numbing medication might affect pain levels while getting an IUD placed. The investigators are also studying participants opinions of their clinicians' empathy. The investigators are inviting patients who arrive at their clinic visit seeking an IUD. Usually, at University of California, San Diego (UCSD), for patients who have never delivered a baby, clinicians use a buffered paracervical block for before IUD placement. The purpose of this research study is to investigate whether a "buffered" (2 cc of sodium bicarbonate, 18 cc of 1% lidocaine) paracervical block (numbing medication given on both sides of the cervix) is effective in reducing pain during IUD placement in individuals with prior C-sections, the difference between buffered and unbuffered for nulliparous patients, and whether a medicated gel reduces pain with the paracervical block.

Electronic Health Record Platform for Birth Control

Calabasas, CA

Hormonal contraceptives are medications that require a prescription, traditionally from a physician or advanced practice provider. Over the past decade, pharmacists have gained the authority to prescribe contraceptives in many states, allowing patients to access these medications directly in pharmacies without first seeing another healthcare provider. The Pharmacist Resource to Implement Services as Modules (PRISM) is an Electronic Health Record platform designed to streamline workflows and provide clinical decision support, making it easier and safer to deliver clinical services in community pharmacies. This pilot study will evaluate patient-reported outcomes for women receiving contraceptive services from pharmacists using the PRISM platform at five community pharmacies across the United States over a 12-week period. The study will assess the quality of care, contraception continuation and failure rates, side effect rates, preventative healthcare utilization, and overall patient experience with pharmacy contraceptive services.

The frequency and severity of heat waves has increased in the last decades. Older adults (over 65 years) have impaired responses to heat stress making them at increased risk for adverse events. Previous heat waves report that women over 65 experience worse health outcomes than any other age group and age matched men. Aging and reproductive hormones, specifically estrogen, independently alter responses to heat stress. However, the combined effects of low estrogen following menopause and aging on the response to heat stress are unknown. In this study, the investigators will identify the role of estrogen in pre and post menopausal women on thermoregulatory responses to heat stress.
