Treatment Summary
Lithium has been used to treat manic episodes for over a century. Its exact method of action is still unknown, but it is known that lithium carbonate has a small therapeutic range and needs to be closely monitored to prevent negative side effects.

How Lithobid Affects Patients
The exact way lithium works is still not completely understood, but it is thought to help by stopping certain enzymes from working, and by changing how the brain responds to a chemical called glutamate.
How Lithobid works in the body
The exact way lithium works is not yet known, but there are several potential pathways. The “inositol depletion theory” suggests that lithium affects inositol monophosphatase, inositol polyphosphatase, and glycogen synthase kinase 3 (GSK-3). Lithium is an uncompetitive inhibitor of inositol monophosphatase, decreasing the amount of inositol triphosphate in the body. Low levels of inositol triphosphate have been linked to memory impairment. Lithium also acts as an uncompetitive inhibitor of inositol polyphosph

The risk or severity of hypotension, sedation, death, somnolence, and respiratory depression can be increased when Lithium carbonate is combined with Oliceridine.
Tenofovir
Major
Lithium carbonate may increase the nephrotoxic activities of Tenofovir.
Lithobid Toxicity & Overdose Risk
The toxic dose of lithium carbonate in rats is 525mg/kg. There is not enough evidence to determine if lithium carbonate is carcinogenic, mutagenic, or affects fertility. However, studies have shown that repeated doses of lithium carbonate can have negative effects on male reproductive organs and testosterone levels. There is conflicting evidence about cardiovascular problems with lithium use in the first trimester of pregnancy. Animal studies suggest that it can be dangerous for the fetus and fertility, so the risks and benefits must be weighed before using it. Breastfeeding while taking lithium should be avoided, but if it is continued the infant should be monitored for thyroid function
