How Asacol Hd Affects Patients
Mesalazine is an active ingredient in sulphasalazine, a drug used to treat ulcerative colitis. It works by reducing inflammation, stopping the production of certain chemicals that help leukocytes move around, and acting as an antioxidant. Mesalazine is more effective when taken directly to the affected area than when taken internally. Studies have shown that it works similarly to prednisolone or sulphasalazine in reducing colitis inflammation in mice and guinea pigs.
How Asacol Hd works in the body
The exact way mesalazine works to treat inflammatory bowel disease is not fully known, but it likely has anti-inflammatory effects. It appears to reduce the production of substances in the colon that cause inflammation, such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes. It may also block a cell protein called Nuclear Factor kappa B, which reduces the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Mesalazine also may reduce the movement of white blood cells to the inflamed area, decrease the production of substances like leukotriene B4, and reduce free radical formation.
