This blocking action helps to widen blood vessels, which in turn lowers blood pressure. Taking amlodipine on a regular basis can help to keep blood pressure levels in check for at least 24 hours. Taking amlodipine with beta-blockers has not been found to cause any significant changes in heart rate or blood pressure. Amlodipine also helps to relieve chest pain caused by angina and can increase exercise time, decrease the frequency of angina attacks, and reduce the need for nitroglycerin.
