      Adaptive sports programs are integral components to combating Veteran isolation, promoting wellbeing and seeking to build teams, networks, communities. These activity-based communities are medicine free treatment systems enhancing Veterans' health from a holistic perspective. This approach to Veteran healthcare is critical as studies indicate Veterans not only have 56% higher perceived social isolation but are also 1.5x more susceptible to suicide than the general public. It is imperative to improve access to exercise and physical activity through adaptive sport or recreation. This proposal is going to focus on Adaptive Indoor Rowing for Veterans with limited or changing trunk stability (i.e. SCI/D, paralysis, paresis, etc.). Rowing is a unique full-body activity that increases cardiovascular demand and increases coordination and aerobic capacity through movement. This proposal aims to address critical gaps in adaptive rowing technology and provide Veterans with limited trunk stability access to full stroke adaptive rowing.

      Personalized Pain Coaching for Sports Injuries

      Atlanta, Georgia
      Patients experiencing sports medicine-related injuries are particularly vulnerable to developing both chronic pain and experiencing prolonged opioid use. This multiarmed randomized controlled trial will quantify the impact of integrating Life Care Specialists, and pain management-focused paraprofessionals, have on increasing access to multimodal pain management approaches and subsequently optimizing both patient-reported pain-related outcomes and objective measures of activity. Life Care Specialists work with patients and clinicians on implementing non-pharmacological pain management approaches, specifically teaching participants how to implement mindfulness-based skills into their recovery, systematically conducting standardized biopsychosocial pain assessments, and coordinating care. By developing a toolbox of pain management approaches with the support of the Life Care Specialist, patients are well positioned to incorporate evidence-based pain management approaches into their recovery that result in improved psychosocial functioning and reduced opioid medication utilization. In total, 150 individuals with sports medicine injuries will be randomized to one of two intervention arms where they will work with a Life Care Specialist in person or over telehealth or receive standard-of-care written postoperative instructions for pain management. Patient-reported outcomes, objective actigraphy movement outcomes captured using wrist-based watches, and opioid utilization captured using medication event monitoring system (MEMS) caps will be evaluated over 3-months postoperatively for a total of 4 study visits.

      The objective of this study is to investigate the differences in postoperative pain, physical health, and mental health outcomes between participants receiving evidence-based mindfulness training and those who do not. Over 200,000 injuries are estimated to occur among NCAA athletes annually. For many, these injuries can be season-ending, which can exacerbate physical, mental, and social well-being. Student-athletes face distinctive challenges compared to traditional students, such as balancing academic and athletic demands, pressures to perform well on and off the field, and the physical demands of competition, all of which can lead to worse mental and emotional outcomes if not properly managed. Injuries heighten stress levels among athletes, remove them from competition, and force students to integrate treatment regimens into already packed academic schedules.

      Neuromuscular Rehabilitation for ACL Injury Prevention in Athletes

      The overall goal of this project is to reduce risk of second anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in vulnerable populations (active athletes between 14 = 24 years old) through the identification of relative injury risk groups based on subject-specific movement patterns prior to second injury, as well as through the determination of effect for differential rehabilitation protocols following initial ACL reconstruction and prior to return to sport. As nearly one-third of athletes who have a primary ACL injury and return to sport will experience a secondary injury, results from the proposed work will allow us to prospectively identify high risk patients who are the most appropriate recipients of enhanced treatment, including targeted training, which may reduce the risk of second ACL injury. Secondary ACL injury has the potential to end athletic careers, promote the development of osteoarthritis, and have debilitating effects on quality of life. Hence, the information gathered in this investigation will offer ACL injured athletes the optimal potential to reduce or potentially prevent these negative health effects before they are initiated.

The main questions it aims to answer are: * Does ropivacaine significantly reduce Visual Analog Scale (VAS) pain scores and pain levels up to one week postoperatively? * Does ropivacaine significantly decrease narcotic use (number of pills taken) up to one week postoperatively? Researchers will compare the pain outcomes and narcotic use of participants who receive a single-shot ropivacaine peripheral nerve block to those of participants who do not receive a single-shot ropivacaine peripheral nerve block for their ACL reconstruction surgery. The goal is to understand if there is a significant difference in participant pain outcomes and narcotic use outside the first 24 hours postoperatively. Participants will: * receive either a single-shot ropivacaine peripheral nerve block intraoperatively or no peripheral nerve block during their ACL Quadriceps tendon graft or bone patellar tendon bone graft reconstruction surgery. * receive and complete questionnaires at postoperative days 1, 4, and 7 regarding their pain scores, levels, and outcomes, effective pain treatments, overall pain interference, narcotic use (number of pills taken), and overall pain treatment satisfaction * receive and complete secondary outcome measures of functional and psychological outcomes regarding their ACL reconstruction surgery at postoperative day 1

      The purpose of this pilot study is to: 1. Determine the feasibility of adherence to completing the home cervico-vestibular exercise program following concussion. 2. Investigate the acceptability of the cervico-vestibular home exercise program. 3. Investigate the impact of the cervico-vestibular home exercise program on symptom reduction, return to play, and return to learn 4. Analyze the timing at which a home exercise program is typically prescribed. Participants will be asked to do and keep track of exercises made to help in their concussion recovery over a two-week period.       Falling Techniques Training for ACL Injury

      The overall purpose of this study is to quantify the effect and retention of one-week training of falling techniques on landing biomechanics associated with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) loading compared to soft-landing techniques in young recreational athletes. The secondary purpose is to assess the safety of the training program. Aim 1: To quantify the effect of one-week training of falling techniques on landing biomechanics during forward, lateral, vertical, and diagonal landings compared to soft-landing techniques. We hypothesize that falling techniques will result in increased knee flexion angles and decreased landing forces, knee abduction and internal rotation angles, and knee moments for all landing directions compared to soft-landing techniques immediately after the training. Aim 2: To assess the retention effects of the falling techniques on landing biomechanics compared to soft landings. We hypothesize that the effects of falling techniques on ACL loading variables will be more highly retained compared to soft-landing techniques two weeks after the training. Aim 3: To identify the safety of the training program. We hypothesize that participants can complete the training without suffering minor, moderate, or major injuries, while occasional minor bruises might be observed.

      Ergonomic Protocol for Esports Performance

      Las Vegas, Nevada
      The goal of this clinical trial is to learn if this ergonomic protocol can improve performance and reduce ergonomic risk in esports athletes. It will also learn about the insight of esports athletes and their experience in implementing this new protocol. The main questions it aims to answer are: Does this ergonomic protocol improve performance? Does this ergonomic protocol reduce ergonomic risk? Researchers will assign the protocol to esports athletes who meet inclusion criteria and express interest in participating in the study. A pre-post design will be conducted to note any differences. Participants will: * Participate in a 6-week study with 4 in-person visits * Volunteers will be requested to participate in a focus group during Week 6. * Implement the strengthening protocol 3x a week and a warm up/cool down protocol before and after each gaming session. * Attend one educational session about gaming ergonomics during Week 1 * Complete the Rapid Entire Body Assessment, Kovaaks Asessment, and a Questionnaire during Week Zero, Week 3, and Week 6.
