Study Summary

This trial looks at how a common form of arthritis affects the bones and joints in the hand, and how this leads to pain.

Who is the study for?
This trial is for women aged 40 to 90 with end-stage thumb osteoarthritis (CMC OA), diagnosed by a clinician. It also seeks age-matched controls without hand or wrist pain. Excluded are pregnant, underage, mentally disabled individuals, those in the legal system, and those with other hand pathologies or certain systemic diseases.Check my eligibility
What is being tested?
The study investigates how muscle activity and joint posture contribute to CMC OA symptoms through range of motion and strength tasks. It compares these factors between patients with CMC OA and healthy age-matched controls to understand movement strategies and pain differences.See study design
What are the potential side effects?
Since this trial involves non-invasive tasks assessing range of motion and strength, side effects are minimal but may include temporary discomfort or fatigue during physical assessments.

Active Control
Group I: CMC OA GroupActive Control2 Interventions
During testing, participants will be asked to perform range of motion tasks, as well as strength tasks at varying effort levels (maximal and sub-maximal). Through a combination of quantitative testing and self-reported assessments, data on experimental pain, clinical pain, hand function, and disease severity will be reported.
Group II: Age-Matched Control GroupActive Control2 Interventions
During testing, participants will be asked to perform range of motion tasks, as well as strength tasks at varying effort levels (maximal and sub-maximal). Through a combination of quantitative testing and self-reported assessments, data on experimental pain, clinical pain, hand function, and disease severity will be reported.
