Amino Acids for Fatty Liver Disease
(AMINOS Trial)
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial tests whether the Essential Amino Acid Supplement by Amino Co can reduce liver fat in teens with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Participants will take either the protein supplement or a placebo for two months to assess the supplement's effectiveness. Afterward, all participants will receive the protein supplement for an additional ten months. The trial seeks teens aged 13-18 diagnosed with NAFLD, who are less active, and fall into the overweight or obese categories. As a Phase 3 trial, it represents the final step before FDA approval, offering participants a chance to contribute to a potentially groundbreaking treatment.
Will I have to stop taking my current medications?
The trial requires that you do not take certain medications that affect insulin sensitivity, like metformin, or blood pressure medications. If you are on these, you may need to stop them to participate.
Is there any evidence suggesting that this trial's treatments are likely to be safe?
Research shows that essential amino acid supplements, like the one used in this trial, have been studied for their effects on liver fat. Some studies suggest these supplements can help reduce liver fat and improve protein utilization in the body. However, taking amino acid supplements can carry risks. Some individuals might experience side effects, though specific details about these side effects remain unclear in available studies.
Since this trial is in a later phase, earlier studies have already tested the supplement for safety. This suggests it is likely well-tolerated, but participants should remain aware of potential side effects. Interested individuals should discuss any concerns with the study team before joining.12345Why do researchers think this study treatment might be promising for fatty liver disease?
Unlike the standard treatments for fatty liver disease, which often involve lifestyle changes and medications like vitamin E or pioglitazone, the Essential Amino Acid Supplement targets the condition by providing the body with the building blocks for proteins that may help improve liver function. Researchers are excited because this approach could offer a more direct and natural way to support liver health, potentially leading to fewer side effects. Additionally, this supplement could enhance metabolic processes, making it a novel option compared to existing therapies. This innovative approach opens up new possibilities for managing fatty liver disease beyond the typical pharmaceutical interventions.
What evidence suggests that this treatment might be an effective treatment for fatty liver disease?
Research has shown that essential amino acid supplements can help reduce liver fat. One study found that these supplements improved protein synthesis and decreased liver fat in older adults. Other clinical trials with similar amino acid combinations have shown promise in treating nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, a serious type of fatty liver disease. In this trial, participants will be randomly assigned to receive either the Essential Amino Acid Supplement or a placebo for 2 months, followed by an open-label extension period where all participants will receive the Essential Amino Acid Supplement for 10 months. These findings suggest that amino acid supplements might also help reduce liver fat in young people.14678

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?
Adolescents aged 13-18 with fatty liver disease, specifically non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), who are overweight and do not exercise much. They must have a confirmed diagnosis by biopsy and be in the later stages of puberty. Those who are very active or don't meet the specific medical criteria cannot join.Inclusion Criteria
