Probiotic Supplementation for Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial tests whether the probiotic Lactobacillus casei can reduce muscle soreness after exercise. Researchers aim to determine if this probiotic aids in soreness and muscle recovery compared to a placebo. It targets healthy, active individuals who exercise regularly without injuries or health issues affecting their workouts. Participants should avoid frequent use of NSAIDs (common pain relievers) or other probiotics during the study. As an unphased trial, this study provides an opportunity to contribute to scientific understanding and potentially benefit from improved muscle recovery.
Will I have to stop taking my current medications?
You will need to stop using NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) regularly and any other probiotic supplements during the study. If you are taking antibiotics, you cannot participate in the trial.
Is there any evidence suggesting that this treatment is likely to be safe for humans?
Research shows that Lactobacillus casei, a type of probiotic, is generally safe. Probiotics like this often support gut health and have been well-tolerated in previous studies. These studies have not shown any serious side effects related to Lactobacillus casei, suggesting it is safe for most people. Since this probiotic is being tested for relieving muscle soreness and not as a new drug, it typically presents fewer safety concerns compared to new medicines.12345
Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Unlike traditional treatments for delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) that often involve anti-inflammatory drugs or physical therapies, Lactobacillus casei offers a unique approach by utilizing probiotics. This treatment is exciting because it targets the gut microbiome, which may help modulate inflammation and muscle recovery from the inside out. Researchers are particularly interested in this method because it might provide a natural and potentially gentler alternative to standard options, with fewer side effects.
What evidence suggests that Lactobacillus casei might be an effective treatment for delayed onset muscle soreness?
Research has shown that Lactobacillus casei, a type of probiotic, might help with muscle soreness after exercise. One study found that taking Lactobacillus casei for six weeks improved athletes' fitness levels and reduced their anxiety. Another study demonstrated that Lactobacillus casei Shirota benefited endurance athletes during winter training. These findings suggest that taking Lactobacillus casei could aid recovery by boosting physical performance and mental well-being. Although direct evidence on muscle soreness is limited, these benefits support the idea that it might help with delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). In this trial, participants in the Probiotic Group will receive Lactobacillus casei to evaluate its effects on DOMS.23678
