What is being tested?

It's a double-blind trial involving 200 Veterans at two VA Health Care Centers where neither the participants nor the researchers know who gets the real medicine versus the placebo.See study design
What are the potential side effects?
Pioglitazone may cause side effects such as edema (swelling), weight gain, anemia (low red blood cell count), headache, muscle pain, sore throat and respiratory infections. There might also be risks related to liver function changes.
