Tobramycin is an antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including those caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a bacteria that is resistant to many other antibiotics. It can be taken by inhalation, injection, or applied as eye drops. Tobramycin was approved by the FDA in 1975 and is known to cause nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity in some cases.

How Tobramycin Affects Patients
Tobramycin is a type of antibiotic that can be used to fight off a range of bacteria, including those that cause pneumonia and infections of the ear and eye. It is an aminoglycoside, meaning it can be toxic to the kidneys and ears, and can cause hearing loss in unborn babies if taken by pregnant women. Other side effects include muscle paralysis, allergic reactions, and skin conditions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis.
How Tobramycin works in the body
Tobramycin is an antibiotic that works against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It does this by binding to the bacterial cell wall and membrane, increasing permeability. This allows more of the tobramycin to enter the cell and disrupt protein synthesis. This disruption of protein synthesis kills the bacteria. Bacteria can develop resistance to tobramycin by directly modifying the tobramycin itself or by modifying the 16S ribosomal RNA.
When to interrupt dosage
The proposed dosage of Tobramycin is contingent upon the declared condition, including Cystic Fibrosis (CF), steroid-responsive inflammation and Meningitis, Bacterial. The dosage fluctuates, as per the method of delivery referenced in the table beneath.

An overdose of tobramycin can cause serious side effects such as reduced kidney function, hearing loss, weakened muscles, and difficulty breathing or paralysis. It is unlikely to have an overdose from accidental ingestion because the drug is not well absorbed in the stomach. In animal studies, the lowest toxic dose of tobramycin when given through injection was 367-1030mg/kg and more than 7500mg/kg when given orally.
