What is Multihance

Gadobenic acid

The Generic name of this drug

Treatment Summary

Gadobenic acid (commonly known as gadobenate dimeglumine) is a contrast agent used in MRI scans, mainly to image the liver. It can also be used to get a better view of the brain and heart. It is different from other contrast agents as it binds weakly and temporarily to proteins in the blood, which increases its signal intensity for a better image.

How Multihance Affects Patients

Gadobenate dimeglumine is a type of contrast agent that is similar to gadopentetate dimeglumine. It is taken up by the liver and excreted through the bile, with up to 5% of the dose being eliminated this way. The effect of gadobenate dimeglumine lasts for about an hour and it is not broken down in the body.

How Multihance works in the body

Gadobenate Dimeglumine works with Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to help create images of the brain. It does this by changing the way protons, which generate a weak magnetic field, behave when exposed to a strong magnetic field. Gadobenate Dimeglumine creates a stronger magnetic field around the protons, which alters their relaxation process and creates an increase in signal intensity. However, it does not cross the blood-brain barrier, so it does not affect normal brain tissue or certain lesions that have not caused an abnormal blood-brain barrier.

When to interrupt dosage

The suggested dose of Multihance is contingent upon the determined condition, like Veno-Occlusive Disease, Magnetic Resonance Angiography and MRI Scan. The amount fluctuates, in accordance with the procedure of delivery outlined in the table below.

Multihance Toxicity & Overdose Risk

Overdosing on gadobenate dimeglumine can be damaging to the kidneys, leading to cell death, energy depletion, calcium imbalance, and cell misalignment. This is believed to be caused by an overload of oxidative stress.
