Dexamethasone, also known as MK-125, is a type of steroid used to treat a variety of conditions, including endocrine, rheumatic, and allergic diseases. It was developed in 1957 and is similar to other corticosteroids like hydrocortisone and prednisolone. Dexamethasone was approved by the FDA in 1958 and recently recommended for use in COVID-19 patients with severe respiratory symptoms. Studies have shown that Dexamethasone can reduce deaths by around one third in patients requiring ventilation and by one fifth in those requiring oxygen.

How Ozurdex Affects Patients

Corticosteroids work by blocking inflammation-causing signals and promoting anti-inflammatory messages. How long these effects last depends on the type and how it's taken. Corticosteroids can be taken in much larger doses than the body would naturally produce. People taking corticosteroids should be aware that these drugs can suppress the natural hormone system, and make them more vulnerable to infections.

How Ozurdex works in the body

Corticosteroids work to reduce inflammation. They do this by blocking blood vessels from widening, and by stopping white blood cells from travelling to sites of inflammation. When they bind to the glucocorticoid receptor, they alter gene expression and create multiple effects over time. These effects include inhibiting the breaking down of fatty acids and proteins, and promoting anti-inflammatory genes. Lower doses of corticosteroids bring about anti-inflammatory effects, while higher doses are immunosuppressive. Long-term use of high doses of corticosteroids can also alter sodium and potassium levels in the body.

When to interrupt dosage

The prescribed dosage of Ozurdex is reliant upon the diagnosed ailment, such as Pink Eye, Brain and Keloids Scars. The extent of dosage is contingent upon the procedure of delivery noted in the table beneath.

The most toxic dose of glucocorticoids in female mice is 6.5g/kg when taken orally and 794mg/kg when taken intravenously. Chronic high doses of glucocorticoids may cause cataracts, glaucoma, increased blood pressure, water retention, high cholesterol, ulcers, pancreatitis, muscle weakness, mood changes, mental illness, thinning skin, allergies, acne, too much body hair, weakened immune system, increased risk of infection, round face, high blood sugar, low calcium levels, low phosphate levels, and slow growth. I have Pars Plantitis and this medication has done a great job at controlling the inflammation. I've also noticed that some of the floaters have cleared up and my eye pain is subsiding.

I've had to get this surgery five times now, but it's helped correct my BRVO. The downside is that I may need cataract surgery because of the implant.
