Lidocaine is a medication used as a local anesthetic to numb the sensations of tissues for a variety of surgical procedures. It blocks the sodium channels in the neurons of the local tissues where it is applied, preventing them from sending signals to the brain about sensations. It also can have side effects such as decreased muscle contractions, vasodilation, hypotension, and changes in heart rate. Lidocaine is used to treat premature ejaculation and is a relatively inexpensive generic medication that is prescribed worldwide.
