Treatment Summary
Lanthanum carbonate, also known as Fosrenol, is a medication used to lower high phosphate levels in people with chronic kidney disease. It is a large pill that should be chewed and taken with meals to help bind to the phosphate in food and stop it from being absorbed by the intestine. Sometimes people forget to chew the pill and have experienced severe choking as a result.

Effectiveness
How Fosrenol Affects Patients
Laboratory tests have shown that lanthanum can effectively bind phosphate at a range of acidity levels found in the human body (pH 3-7). When tested in a simulated stomach environment, lanthanum was able to bind up to 97% of the available phosphate when it was present in double the amount of phosphate. Bile acids do not affect the phosphate binding ability of lanthanum. To work properly, lanthanum must be taken with or right after meals.
How Fosrenol works in the body
Lanthanum carbonate helps to reduce the amount of phosphate absorbed by the body. It does this by forming a complex with the phosphate that cannot be absorbed by the body. This complex then passes through the digestive system, preventing it from entering the bloodstream. As a result, the amount of both phosphate and calcium phosphate in the body is reduced.

Description
Atorvastatin
Minor
The absorption of Atorvastatin can be decreased when combined with Lanthanum carbonate.
Cerivastatin
Minor
The absorption of Cerivastatin can be decreased when combined with Lanthanum carbonate.
Fluvastatin
Minor
The absorption of Fluvastatin can be decreased when combined with Lanthanum carbonate.
Halofantrine
Minor
Lanthanum carbonate can cause a decrease in the absorption of Halofantrine resulting in a reduced serum concentration and potentially a decrease in efficacy.
Lovastatin
Minor
The absorption of Lovastatin can be decreased when combined with Lanthanum carbonate.
Fosrenol Toxicity & Overdose Risk
Common symptoms of lanthanum carbonate overdose include headache, nausea, and vomiting. Animal testing has shown that this drug is not toxic when given orally, even in large doses (up to 2000mg/kg). No deaths or other adverse effects have been observed in mice, rats, or dogs after single oral doses.

Patient Q&A Section about fosrenol
These questions and answers are submitted by anonymous patients, and have not been verified by our internal team.
What type of medication is Fosrenol?
"FOSRENOL works by binding phosphate in the gut so that it isn't absorbed into the body, reducing serum phosphate levels."
Answered by AI
When should I take Fosrenol?
"Fosrenol should be taken with food to avoid nausea and vomiting. The tablets must be chewed completely and not swallowed whole. To aid with chewing, the tablets may be crushed."
Answered by AI
Is there a generic for Fosrenol?
"Lanthanum, the generic version of the drug Fosrenol, may be much cheaper than the brand version of the drug."
Answered by AI
What is Fosrenol used for?
"Fosrenol prevents the body from absorbing phosphate by bind to it in the gastrointestinal tract, which then allows it to be removed from the body through the feces. This medication is used to treat patients with end stage renal disease who have high phosphate levels in their blood, which can lead to problems with calcium absorption and other serious medical problems."
