What is Clotrimazole

ClotrimazoleThe Generic name of this drug
Treatment SummaryClotrimazole is an antifungal medication used to treat fungal infections. It is available in creams, pessaries, and slow-dissolving tablets. It has been studied for its potential uses in treating sickle cell disease, malaria, and some cancers. Clotrimazole is often used to treat yeast infections and athlete's foot due to its minimal side effects and easy metabolism.

Effectiveness

How Clotrimazole Affects PatientsClotrimazole is a medicine used to treat fungal infections. It works by making it harder for fungi to grow and spread, but it won't necessarily kill the fungi. Clotrimazole is usually considered a "fungistatic" drug, meaning it stops the growth of fungi but doesn't kill them. But at higher concentrations, clotrimazole can also act as a "fungicidal" drug, meaning it can actually kill the fungi. Unfortunately, some fungi have become resistant to clotrimazole, which means the drug may not work as well.
How Clotrimazole works in the bodyClotrimazole works by damaging the membrane that surrounds fungi cells. It stops a key molecule, called ergosterol, from forming. Without ergosterol, fungi cells cannot build a proper cell wall and they die. Clotrimazole also affects other parts of fungi cells, like the calcium pump and calcium channels, which can also lead to their death.

When to interrupt dosage

The suggested amount of Clotrimazole is contingent upon the diagnosed condition, including Vulvitis, Trichophytosis and Radiotherapy Side Effects. The dosage fluctuates, based on the technique of delivery (e.g. Cream or Topical) mentioned in the table beneath.
