Morphine is a powerful pain reliever derived from poppy seeds. It is still widely used today, but is limited due to a high risk of addiction and abuse. There are also several other opioids that are similar to morphine, such as codeine, fentanyl, methadone, hydrocodone, hydromorphone, meperidine, and oxycodone. Morphine was officially approved by the FDA in 1941.

How Avinza Affects Patients

Morphine works by blocking pain signals from reaching the brain. It usually takes 6-30 minutes after being taken for it to take effect. Taking too much morphine and other opioids may cause changes in how the brain works. Additionally, the strength of morphine’s effect is different in men and women. For men, 76ng/mL of morphine is needed for the desired effect, while in women it only takes 22ng/mL. Morphine-6-glucuronide is much less effective than morphine, with only 22% of the potency.

How Avinza works in the body

Morphine-6-glucuronide is the main cause of morphine's effects. It binds to two types of opioid receptors in the brain, the mu and kappa receptors. These receptors are responsible for morphine's effect on the pleasure centers of the brain, as well as its ability to modify breathing and create addiction.

Avinza Toxicity & Overdose Risk

The toxic dose for males and females is 0.78µg/mL and 0.98µg/mL respectively. Symptoms of an overdose can include shallow breathing, drowsiness, limp muscles, cold and clammy skin, constricted pupils, and dilated pupils. In severe cases, overdose could cause fluid in the lungs, slow heart rate, low blood pressure, heart attack, and death. Treatment of overdose should include oxygen, medications to increase blood pressure, and naloxone to reverse the effects of the drug.

Originally, this medication was effective in treating my nerve pain. However, it caused new problems with joint and muscle pain all over my body. I felt exhausted and cranky all the time. It took a long time for my doctor to understand that these were side effects of the medication, but eventually we switch ed to Exalgo and I feel so much better now.

Avinza for Severe Pain with Opioid Tolerance

Avinza is very expensive, and you have to take it once a day. It does help with pain, but like any narcotic, tolerance develops over time. I've had the daily dosage increased four times in 16 years. The best thing I can say about Avinza is that it keeps me functioning and on my feet; without it, I probably wouldn't be working. That said, I still have quite a lot of pain and am not at all comfortable.

I have a spinal cord injury and two diskectomies (cervical) in which the last one left me with some residual paralysis on my right side, constant burning and terrible pain. Avinza really helps to take the edge off of the pain.
