Effectiveness

How Akynzeo Affects Patients

Palonosetron is a medication used to reduce nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy or surgery. It works by blocking the effects of serotonin, a chemical in the body that stimulates a nerve in the brain that causes vomiting. Palonosetron is specifically designed to target serotonin 5-HT3 receptors, which are found on nerve endings in the stomach and brain. It has no effect on other receptors in the body. When chemotherapy causes damage to the stomach and intestines, it causes the release of serotonin which triggers the vomiting reflex, resulting in nausea and vomiting. Palonosetron helps to block this reflex and reduce these symptoms

How Akynzeo works in the body

Palonosetron is a drug that helps stop nausea and vomiting. It does this by blocking serotonin receptors in the brain and intestines, which in turn stops the stimulation of the vomiting center in the brain. Palonosetron also appears to be effective in preventing delayed nausea and vomiting caused by some cancer treatments. This is thought to be because the drug remains in the body for a long time, allowing it to continue to block serotonin receptors and prevent nausea and vomiting.
