Trial Summary

What is the purpose of this trial?

The goal of this clinical trial is to learn about the acceptability, feasibility, and effectiveness of smoke-free housing policy implementation in Permanent Supportive Housing communities. The main objective of this study is to identify and refine adaptations for a smoke-free housing implementation framework that incorporates behavioral health support and meets the needs of residents living in Permanent Supportive Housing.

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It seems focused on smoke-free housing policies rather than medication use.

What data supports the effectiveness of the treatment Smokefree Implementation Framework and Toolkit for reducing secondhand smoke exposure?

Research shows that smoke-free home interventions, like those implemented in 2-1-1 call centers and permanent supportive housing, are effective in promoting smoke-free environments and reducing secondhand smoke exposure, especially in low-income populations.12345

Is the Smoke-Free Housing Strategy safe for humans?

The Smoke-Free Housing Strategy, which encourages voluntary smoke-free homes, has been tested in various settings and is generally considered safe for humans. It focuses on reducing secondhand smoke exposure without introducing any harmful interventions.15678

How does the smoke-free housing treatment differ from other treatments for secondhand smoke exposure?

This treatment is unique because it focuses on implementing smoke-free policies in multiunit housing to reduce secondhand smoke exposure, particularly in low-income and vulnerable populations. Unlike other treatments that might focus on individual behavior change, this approach targets the living environment to create a smoke-free space, which can lead to broader community health benefits.125910

Eligibility Criteria

This trial is for adults living in six specific affordable housing communities, whether they smoke or not. It includes residents receiving support services and property managers or their appointees who can engage in English interviews. Caseworkers providing behavioral health support are also eligible. Non-English or non-Spanish speakers cannot participate.

Inclusion Criteria

I manage an affordable housing community involved in the study and can participate in English.
Adults who live in six affordable housing communities, smoke or do not smoke tobacco, receive or are not recipients of Permanent Supportive Housing services and can fill out a survey in English or Spanish.
I am a caseworker providing mental health and substance use support, fluent in English.

Findings from Research

The Smoke-Free Homes (SFH) Program was found to be acceptable and feasible for implementation across multiple 2-1-1 sites, with 70% of staff believing it contributed to more smoke-free homes in their communities.
Despite its perceived effectiveness, challenges such as sustainability, resource demands, and integration into existing workflows were significant barriers to successful implementation, highlighting the need for ongoing support and funding for future tobacco control initiatives.
