Gerofit Power Training for Mobility Impairment
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial tests a new power training program called Gerofit Power Training, designed to improve leg strength and overall physical function for veterans. Participants will be divided into two groups: one will follow the usual exercise routine, known as Gerofit Standard of Care, while the other will try the new power training method. The study seeks veterans aged 65 and older who are part of the Rocky Mountain Regional Gerofit Program and can independently participate in group activities. The goal is to determine if the new training is easy to follow and effective in boosting physical health. As an unphased trial, this study offers veterans a chance to contribute to innovative exercise research and potentially enhance their physical well-being.
Will I have to stop taking my current medications?
The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It's best to discuss this with the trial coordinators or your doctor.
Is there any evidence suggesting that this trial's treatments are likely to be safe?
Research shows that exercise programs like Gerofit are safe for older adults. While specific safety details for Gerofit Power Training are not yet available, Gerofit programs generally help older veterans improve mobility and reduce hospital visits. These programs include exercises for cardiovascular health, muscle strength, flexibility, and balance.
Previous studies have not identified major safety issues in similar exercise programs, suggesting that Gerofit Power Training is likely safe. However, the trial is in the "Not Applicable" phase, indicating that safety information is still being collected. Researchers will closely monitor participants throughout the study to ensure their safety.12345Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Researchers are excited about the Gerofit Power Training for mobility impairment because it introduces a unique focus on power training, which differs from the standard exercise programs. While traditional Gerofit programs incorporate aerobic, strength, flexibility, and balance exercises, the power training intervention adds an emphasis on explosive movements designed to improve muscle power and speed. This approach could potentially enhance mobility and functional independence more effectively than standard exercise routines, offering new hope for individuals with mobility challenges.
What evidence suggests that this trial's treatments could be effective for mobility impairment?
Research has shown that Gerofit Power Training, one of the interventions in this trial, can greatly enhance movement in older adults. Studies have found that participants experience meaningful improvements of 7-20% in various movement abilities after this training. This includes stronger legs and better physical function, both crucial for daily activities. The Gerofit program, which incorporates power training, is also associated with improved overall function and mental health. These findings suggest that Gerofit Power Training may enhance movement and quality of life for those with movement difficulties. Participants in this trial will be randomized to receive either the Gerofit Power Training intervention or the Gerofit Standard of Care exercise program.12467

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?
This trial is for older veterans who are experiencing physical deconditioning and mobility impairment. Participants should be part of the Gerofit program but cannot join if they have conditions that would limit their full participation in a power training exercise regimen.Inclusion Criteria
