What is the purpose of this trial?

The current study aims to explore the efficacy of a text message based safety behavior fading intervention compared to a progressive muscle relaxation intervention for appearance concerns.

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?

This trial is for people who have concerns about their appearance related to social anxiety, body dysmorphic disorder, or eating disorders like anorexia nervosa. Specific inclusion and exclusion criteria are not listed.

Inclusion Criteria

I am between 18 and 65 years old.
Having an internet-capable smart-phone
Scoring at or above the empirical cutoff for appearance concerns measured by the Social Appearance Anxiety Scale (i.e., 52)

Exclusion Criteria

Failing attention checks in baseline data collection
I have changed my psychiatric medications in the past 4 weeks.

Timeline for a Trial Participant

Screening

Participants are screened for eligibility to participate in the trial

1-2 weeks

Treatment

Participants receive daily text message interventions for either safety behavior fading or progressive muscle relaxation for 28 days

4 weeks
Daily virtual interactions via text messages

Follow-up

Participants are monitored for safety and effectiveness after treatment

4 weeks
Virtual assessments at Day 28 and Day 56
