Healthy Lifestyle Program for Childhood Obesity
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial tests a program designed to help families of children with overweight and obesity adopt healthier lifestyles. The main goal is to evaluate the effectiveness of the "Get Up & Go Healthy Lifestyle Program" in improving health outcomes. Participants will either start the program immediately or after a short wait. Children with a BMI (body mass index) at or above the 85th percentile who can participate in physical activities similar to a school gym class are eligible to join. As an unphased trial, this study offers families the opportunity to participate in innovative research aimed at enhancing children's health and well-being.
Do I have to stop taking my current medications for the trial?
The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications.
What prior data suggests that this program is safe for children with obesity?
Research shows that the Get Up & Go Healthy Lifestyle Program targets children aged 6-14 with high body weight. The program aims to teach healthy habits, such as better eating and more exercise. It is generally easy for kids to follow, as it encourages positive changes without medicine or medical procedures.
Parents have observed that similar programs improve their children's eating and activity levels. These programs often provide healthy snacks and meals, which families find helpful. Reports have not linked any negative effects directly to these programs, as they focus mainly on education and support.
The study is labeled "Not Applicable" in terms of trial phases, indicating that the program has been used before without major safety issues. Programs like Get Up & Go are considered safe, focusing on gradual behavior changes rather than medical treatments.12345Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Researchers are excited about the Get Up & Go Healthy Lifestyle Program because it takes a comprehensive, hands-on approach to tackling childhood obesity. Unlike standard treatments that might focus on medication or isolated dietary changes, this program emphasizes a holistic lifestyle transformation, integrating physical activity, nutrition education, and behavioral support. The program aims to empower children and their families with practical tools and skills for long-term health, which could lead to more sustainable outcomes compared to traditional methods.
What evidence suggests that the Get Up & Go Healthy Lifestyle Program is effective for childhood obesity?
Research has shown that the Get Up & Go Healthy Lifestyle Program, which participants in this trial may receive, can help children manage obesity. One study found that a similar program improved children's body mass index (BMI) and reduced the number of overweight or obese children over 18 to 24 months. Another study demonstrated that community programs like this one can help children maintain a healthy weight for up to two years. Additionally, a family-based version of this program improved children's lifestyles, even when conducted online. These findings suggest that the Get Up & Go program could help children live healthier lives and manage their weight.36789
