Digital Health Intervention for High Blood Pressure
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial aims to determine if grocery delivery services, combined with personalized health coaching, can help individuals adhere to the heart-healthy DASH diet, which may lower high blood pressure. Participants will receive skills training, set nutrition goals, and get personalized text feedback, along with an Instacart+ membership for grocery deliveries. It is ideal for adults with high blood pressure who live in areas with limited access to quality food and have a smartphone. As an unphased trial, this study provides a unique opportunity to explore innovative lifestyle changes that could significantly improve heart health.
Will I have to stop taking my current medications?
The trial does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It mentions that participants can have hypertension whether or not they are taking medication, so it seems likely you can continue your current treatment.
What prior data suggests that this digital health intervention is safe for individuals with hypertension?
Research has shown that digital health tools like Access Nourish are generally safe for people with high blood pressure. Past studies found that these tools can help individuals adhere to the DASH eating plan, which is known to control blood pressure. Importantly, these studies did not identify any major negative effects from using the digital tool itself, suggesting it is well-tolerated by users.
In this trial, participants will use a digital method to improve their diet and manage their blood pressure. They will receive support such as skills training, grocery delivery, and personalized feedback. This type of digital health tool has been tested in other contexts and has proven safe and effective in helping manage blood pressure without major side effects.12345Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Unlike the standard of care for high blood pressure, which often involves medications like ACE inhibitors or beta-blockers, Access Nourish is a digital health intervention that offers a fresh approach. Researchers are excited about this treatment because it combines skills training, nutrient goal setting, and personalized feedback, all delivered remotely through smartphone technology. This innovative method not only empowers individuals to manage their health actively but also provides practical support with features like Instacart+ memberships and tailored grocery lists, aiming to make healthy living more accessible and sustainable.
What evidence suggests that this digital health intervention is effective for high blood pressure?
Research has shown that digital health tools, like Access Nourish, can help individuals adhere to the DASH diet, which lowers blood pressure. In this trial, all participants will receive the Access Nourish intervention, including digital tools, grocery delivery, and personalized coaching to facilitate healthy eating. One study found that a similar digital program improved diet quality and lowered blood pressure in individuals with hypertension. However, it did not outperform a group receiving similar attention, suggesting its effectiveness may vary among individuals. This approach supports people in managing high blood pressure by aiding adherence to a heart-healthy diet.12346
