What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial aims to assist individuals with bladder cancer who plan to undergo a cystectomy, a surgery to remove the bladder. Participants will watch educational videos that teach strategies to reduce the risk of side effects such as mobility issues, medication problems, and poor quality of life before and after surgery. Some participants will also receive follow-up services to reinforce these strategies. The trial seeks individuals undergoing cystectomy for bladder cancer at the University of Chicago who can provide consent. As an unphased trial, it offers a unique opportunity to access supportive resources that may enhance the surgical experience and recovery.

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It focuses on educational videos and questionnaires for bladder cancer patients undergoing surgery.

What prior data suggests that this educational program is safe for bladder cancer patients?

Research has shown that educational video modules for bladder cancer patients preparing for bladder removal surgery are safe. These videos teach methods to reduce issues like difficulty moving and assist with medication management.

No known risks or side effects result from watching these videos. Similar programs have demonstrated benefits, helping patients feel better before and after surgery. They can also prevent complications and improve overall quality of life.

Prospective participants can feel confident in the safety of these educational videos. They are designed to support patients throughout the surgery journey.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about these educational video modules for bladder cancer patients because they offer a unique approach to enhancing patient outcomes around surgery. Standard treatment for bladder cancer typically involves surgical procedures like cystectomy, but these educational videos aim to empower patients with knowledge on reducing mobility loss, managing medications better, and preventing delirium. The videos help patients document what matters most to them, which is a personalized aspect not commonly emphasized in traditional care. By incorporating these educational sessions, researchers hope to improve recovery experiences and hospital discharge planning, ultimately leading to better overall patient well-being.

What evidence suggests that these educational videos are effective for bladder cancer patients undergoing cystectomy?

Research has shown that educational programs, like video modules, help bladder cancer patients manage their condition better. In this trial, participants will divide into two groups: one will watch educational videos before surgery, and the other will watch the videos and receive additional geriatric follow-up services. These videos can reduce complications after surgery, such as difficulty moving and problems with medication management. Studies have found that these educational videos teach ways to lessen negative side effects, like confusion and a lower quality of life. Patients who learn these strategies before surgery often experience fewer issues afterward. This suggests that watching educational videos effectively prepares patients for bladder removal surgery (cystectomy).12356

The internet-based mobile health tool for patients after cystectomy was found to be feasible and acceptable, with 90% of patients using it within the first week post-discharge, although engagement decreased to 50% over time due to technological issues.
Despite high patient satisfaction (over 90%), the use of the tool did not show a statistically significant association with reduced readmission rates, indicating that further research is needed to assess its effectiveness in improving patient outcomes.

Post-operative education about bladder cancer and topical immunotherapy significantly impacts the psychological and social well-being of patients, as they experience intense distress upon diagnosis despite the cancer's curability.
Quality of life improves during maintenance therapy with bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG), indicating that ongoing support and education from urologists are crucial for helping patients manage their condition and improve their overall health.
