How Medrol Affects Patients

Corticosteroids are drugs used to reduce inflammation. They block signals that cause inflammation and increase signals that help stop it. Corticosteroids can be taken in doses much larger than what the body produces naturally. Patients should be aware of the risk of decreased activity of the hormones that control the body's response to stress, as well as an increased risk of infection.

How Medrol works in the body

Corticosteroids reduce inflammation in the body by blocking molecules that cause swelling, as well as decreasing the number of white blood cells that flow to the site of inflammation. Corticosteroids also stop certain enzymes from creating molecules that promote inflammation and reduce activity of other molecules that cause inflammation. Low doses of corticosteroids reduce inflammation while higher doses lower the body's immune response. When taken for a long period of time, corticosteroids can also raise the amount of sodium in the body and lower the amount of potassium.
