Treatment Summary
Galantamine is a medication used to treat mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease. It works by blocking an enzyme in the brain that breaks down acetylcholine, a chemical that helps send messages between nerve cells. This increases the amount of acetylcholine in the brain, which may improve thinking and memory. Galantamine is marketed under the brand name Razadyne and comes in oral tablets and a solution. It is not a cure and does not stop the progression of Alzheimer's disease, but it can help slow down the symptoms.

How Galantamine Hydrobromide Affects Patients
Galantamine works by increasing the levels of the chemical acetylcholine in both the brain and muscles. It does this by blocking an enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine, and by boosting how well acetylcholine binds to receptors. While taking galantamine won't stop the progression of dementia, it has been shown to improve cognition, daily functioning, and behavioral symptoms in people with Alzheimer's disease. Galantamine also has been studied in people with vascular dementia and those with Alzheimer's disease combined with cerebrovascular disease, and it is able to reverse symptoms of acute anticholinergic syndrome (e.g
How Galantamine Hydrobromide works in the body
Alzheimer's disease is an irreversible brain disorder that leads to memory loss, cognitive decline, and the accumulation of abnormal proteins. It is caused by a gradual decrease in the number of cholinergic neurons, which are responsible for producing a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. Galantamine is a drug that helps to treat Alzheimer's by blocking the breakdown of acetylcholine, resulting in higher levels of this neurotransmitter in the brain. It also binds to nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, which help to regulate the release of various neurotransmitters in the brain. This increased activity helps to improve cognitive performance and reduce behavioural symptoms

Galantamine Hydrobromide Toxicity & Overdose Risk
The toxic dose of galantamine in rats is 75mg/kg. Overdosing on galantamine can lead to a cholinergic crisis, which includes nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping, tears, frequent urination and bowel movements, excessive sweating, slow heartbeat, low blood pressure, difficulty breathing, collapse and seizures. Muscle weakness or twitching may also occur. In some cases, hallucinations have been observed. If someone overdoses on galantamine, general supportive measures should be taken and atropine may be administered intravenously to reverse the effects of the drug. It is not known if galantamine can be removed from

These questions and answers are submitted by anonymous patients, and have not been verified by our internal team.
Is galantamine good for dementia?
"Galantamine can help improve memory, awareness, and daily functioning in people with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. It's unclear how it works exactly, but it's thought to increase the level of a chemical called acetylcholine in the brain. This chemical is important for memory and thinking."
Answered by AI
What is the drug galantamine used for?
"Galantamine can be used to help relieve mild to moderate dementia symptoms that are associated with Alzheimer's disease. It will not stop the progression of the disease, but may help improve memory and mental clarity."
Answered by AI
What does galantamine do to the brain?
"Galantamine is a medication that improves memory and thought by increasing the amount of a natural substance in the brain. Galantamine may help people with Alzheimer's disease by slowing the loss of these abilities."
Answered by AI
Who should not take galantamine?
"You shouldn't take this drug if you have severe liver disease. If you have moderate to severe kidney disease, you should not take more than 16 mg of this drug per day. Your doctor will adjust your dose accordingly."
