How Depo-Medrol Affects Patients

Corticosteroids help reduce inflammation in the body by blocking certain signals that cause inflammation, and promoting signals that reduce inflammation. They are generally safe and effective, but doses used may be much higher than what the body naturally produces. When taking corticosteroids, people should be aware of the risks of suppressing the body's natural ability to fight infections and illness.

How Depo-Medrol works in the body

Corticosteroids help reduce inflammation by blocking the widening of blood vessels and the flow of white blood cells to sites of inflammation. Corticosteroids change gene expression to inhibit inflammation causing proteins and promote anti-inflammatory proteins. Lower doses of corticosteroids work to reduce inflammation, while higher doses weaken the immune system. When taken for a long period of time, corticosteroids can bind to receptors in the body and cause an increase in sodium levels and a decrease in potassium levels.

Depo-Medrol Toxicity & Overdose Risk

The lowest toxic dose of glucocorticoids in rats is greater than 4g/kg and in mice is 2292mg/kg. Long-term use of high doses of glucocorticoids can cause a range of side effects, such as cataracts, glaucoma, water retention, mood changes, and immune suppression. If someone has overdosed on glucocorticoids, they should receive supportive care and their dosage should be reduced.

Dr. injected me with 80mg to my knee and things only got worse. The area around the injection site doubled in size and I'm still having trouble walking even 5 days later. When I follow up with her, she can't see me for two weeks! And, on top of that, the injection gave me severe heartburn. So now I have to buy an over-the-counter medication (Prolosec) just to combat the chest pain and burning sensation... Not to mention that she hit a vessel at the injection site.
