Homelessness and associated traumas disproportionately affect women. The biopsychosocial health consequences of untreated trauma are profound. PTSD frequently co-occurs with other chronic health conditions, including substance use disorders (SUD). Co-morbid PTSD and SUD (PTSD+SUD) is common and difficult to treat, resulting in severe morbidity and premature mortality among women experiencing homelessness. Executing this study will help to address the disproportionate PTSD+SUD comorbidity burden, which drives health inequities in the growing population of women experiencing homelessness within and beyond Chicago.

This research study will test the effectiveness of a culturally grounded parenting intervention called Parenting in 2 Worlds (P2W). This intervention is designed for American Indian / Alaska Native (AI) parents/guardians of adolescents who reside in urban areas. This will be a multi-regional effectiveness trial across four regions: Northeast (Buffalo/Niagara), Midwest (St. Paul/Minneapolis), Mountain (Denver), and Southwest (Phoenix). There are four specific aims. First, this study will test the effectiveness of Parenting in Two Worlds (P2W) as compared to an informational family health intervention, Healthy Families in 2 Worlds (HF2W), in improving parenting and family functioning. Second, this study will test if the relative effectiveness of P2W, compared to HF2W, varies by parent's/guardian's level of socioeconomic vulnerability, experiences of historical loss, or AI cultural identity. Third, this study will examine if P2W can reduce adolescent (ages 12 - 17) risky health behaviors including substance use, depressive symptoms, suicidality, and risky sexual behaviors. Fourth, this study will examine whether positive changes in parenting and family functioning that result from P2W lead to positive changes in adolescent's health behaviors.

Phase 1 will consist of a small pilot Open Trial (OT). The objective of Phase 1 is to develop an organization-level Youth Engagement (YE) prevention strategy and implement it in a community-based organization to test feasibility and acceptability in an open trial with one organization. This will include developing a manual for systematically incorporating YE into prevention efforts in community settings. Phase 2 will consist of a small pilot Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT). Four prevention organizations will be randomized either to include Youth Engagement in prevention efforts (treatment) or not (control). The study team will attempt to match the treatment and control groups on relevant characteristics such as geographic location (e.g., urban, rural), population served (e.g., church-based, school-based), and/or prior Youth Engagement involvement. The objective of the second phase of this study is to evaluate the preliminary effectiveness of YE as a prevention strategy for opioid misuse in a small pilot randomized control trial (RCT). This pilot study will examine the effects of the YE prevention strategy on (a) organization-level outcomes, such as perceived value added to prevention programming and (b) individual-level outcomes such as personal skills and attitudes as well as knowledge and attitudes about substances including opioids. Up to 15 leaders/staff and 45 youth/young adults (60 people overall) will be recruited for the study.

Tobacco use is a risk factor for at least 20 types of cancer and remains the leading preventable cause of cancer in Canada. Smoking cessation is an important cancer prevention strategy for the close to 2 million Canadian women who currently smoke. However, findings from controlled trials and real-world clinical settings indicate that women have greater difficulty achieving abstinence following a quit attempt than men. There is some evidence that hormonal levels and fluctuations throughout the menstrual cycle (MC) may contribute to the greater difficulty women experience when trying to quit smoking. In this study, the start of a quit attempt using nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) will be targeted to specific phases of MC. It was hypothesized that starting a quit attempt during the first half of MC (follicular phase) will result in increased quit success compared to starting during the second half of MC (luteal phase) or the usual practice of not targeting quit start date to MC phase.

The goal of this clinical trial is to compare the effectiveness of the Breaking the Cycle (BTC) and Maxxine Wright (MW) programs in substance-involved mothers and their children. One key difference between the two programs is that the BTC program contains an infant mental health component while the MW program primarily focuses on the mothers. The main questions the trial aims to answer are: * Do children at BTC demonstrate enhanced infant mental health compared to children at MW up to 2 years post-intervention? * Do mother-child dyads at BTC experience more decreases in child adverse childhood experiences (ACE), maternal stress, and mental health symptoms and have better home environment scores, parenting attitudes, and mother-child relationship scores compared to mother-child dyads at MW? * Are enhanced infant mental health outcomes associated with children's lower psychosocial risk scores and mothers with lower ACE scores, lower depression and anxiety scores, and lower maternal stress? * Are the associations between treatment dose and infant mental health scores mediated by parenting attitudes and the mother-child relationship? Does child exposure to psychosocial risk moderate the association between treatment dose and child outcomes? * How do the mechanisms of change lead to the effectiveness of BTC? What are the potential lifetime health and non-health outcomes of at-risk children at BTC? What is the long-term social return on investment (SROI) of BTC? Participants will complete several questionnaires at three timepoints while receiving services at either BTC or MW: during the intake phase, 12 months after their engagement in services and 24 months after their engagement in services. Given that the two programs serve a similar demographic of women, researchers will compare the BTC group and the MW group to establish the comparative effectiveness and mechanisms of change of the infant mental health component of BTC.

The goal of this clinical trial is to learn if administering a high dose stimulant with Contingency Management reduces days of use in adults who use methamphetamine better than the usual treatment provided by the clinic. The main questions the trial aims to answer are: Is a high dose stimulant better than a placebo and usual treatment at helping reduce the number of days they use methamphetamine? Is a high dose stimulant with contingency management better than placebo and usual treatment at helping people reduce the number of days they use methamphetamine? Participants will be placed randomly into one of four groups: 1. Usual treatment and placebo 2. Usual treatment, placebo and contingency management 3. Usual treatment and high dose stimulant 4. Usual treatment, high dose stimulant and contingency management Participation includes the following: 1. Participants will receive medication or placebo weekly for 15 weeks. 2. Participants will attend the clinic for weekly treatment 3. Participants will attend the clinic once every 2 weeks for study visits. Each visit will take about an hour to complete. At these visits, participants will be asked to provide a urine sample and complete questionnaires.

The overarching goal of this study phase, Phase II component is to implement Enhanced Digital-Chemosensory-Based Olfactory Training for Remote Management of Substance Use Disorders (EDITOR) device in substance use disorder (SUD) clinics to demonstrate pilot effectiveness for SUD outcomes compared to treatment as usual (TAU) and Computerized Chemosensory-Based Orbitofrontal Networks Training (CBOT) device as active control. The investigators will conduct a multi-site study of 300 adult patients with opiate use disorder (OUD), stimulant (i.e., cocaine, methamphetamine) and/or alcohol use disorder (AUD) from community and clinics to evaluate whether EDITOR is associated with better patient treatment outcomes (e.g., retention in treatment and abstinence). The pilot study will provide preliminary data needed for design of a Phase III trial, including estimates of effect size. The investigators will also explore development of machine learning/AI algorithms integrating clinical and physiological data into treatment decision guides for providers.

Substance use disorder (SUD) or addiction to drugs/alcohol is a devastating disease. Over 40,000 overdose deaths have happened in Canada since 2016, 1 in 5 Canadians will have a SUD, and 70% of those with SUD continue to relapse, showing that we urgently need new treatments. The Helping Addiction by Individualized Therapeutic Stimulation (HABITS) Study is exploring deep brain stimulation (DBS) for people who have failed to quit harmful substances. Over 250,000 people have received DBS, which is well-established for Parkinson's disease and has evidence of success in major depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder. DBS uses electricity to directly stimulate areas of the brain. However, for DBS to work effectively, it needs to be personalized to each individual, which will be pursued through stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG). DBS and SEEG are minimally invasive and reversible, with a low risk of side effects. SEEG started over 70 years ago to find seizure location in the brain of children and adults with epilepsy. It now has been used for major depression and chronic pain to guide DBS. It involves inserting electrodes temporarily across critical brain areas and monitoring patients for several days. SEEG can provide an understanding of where addiction and craving are in the brain to guide the placement of DBS electrodes and device settings that are optimal for a person. In the HABITS Study, 10 participants will receive DBS guided by SEEG and undergo 11 study visits. Individuals will first undergo detoxification with CAMH. Then, they will receive DBS and SEEG at Toronto Western Hospital, where they will stay for 1 to 2 weeks. Finally, they will be followed for a year, where they will receive standard psychiatric care. SUD causes heavy burdens on individuals, families, healthcare systems, and society. The HABITS Study promises to personalize DBS to treat those who are struggling with severe addiction.

The goal of this clinical trial is to determine if active transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) plus varenicline is an effective, safe and accessible treatment option for smoking cessation. The main questions this trial aims to answer are: 1. Does active tDCS plus varenicline improve short-term and long-term smoking abstinence rates compared to sham tDCS plus varenicline? 2. Are the safety profiles between active tDCS plus varenicline and sham tDCS plus varenicline different? The tDCS treatment schedule includes 10 daily sessions for the first 2 weeks (M to F), followed by 5 single bi-weekly booster sessions for the remainder of the treatment period. Participants will come in-person for two follow-up sessions to assess smoking behaviour at 6- and 12-months post-treatment.

Peer Behavioral Intervention for HIV

This randomized Type 1 hybrid effectiveness-implementation trial (N=186) will evaluate the effectiveness and implementation of a peer-delivered problem solving and behavioral activation intervention for adherence to LAI-PrEP/ART ("Peer Activate-LAI") compared to enhanced treatment as usual (ETAU) for a largely Black, substance-using population living with or at high risk for HIV. Specific aims are to: Aim 1: Evaluate the effectiveness of Peer Activate-LAI over 12-months on: a) LAI-PrEP/ART adherence (primary; receipt of all 6 maintenance injections within 7-day window); and b) substance use (secondary; WHOASSIST, urine toxicology); and c) Explore the moderating role of SRD-related factors (exploratory) Aim 2: To evaluate the implementation of Peer Activate-LAI including feasibility, acceptability, fidelity, and adoption guided by RE-AIM and Proctor's model,12,13 assessed using mixed methods, including a rapid ethnographic assessment of how SRD-related factors may affect implementation. Aim 3: To evaluate the economic viability of Peer Activate-LAI, including a) cost of implementation and sustainment, and b) cost-effectiveness from multiple stakeholder perspectives. This study will inform a potentially scalable, cost-effective model for facilitating effective adherence to LAI formulations of PrEP/ART within Black, substance-using populations with multiple minority identities who to date have had limited support for improving LAI adherence for HIV treatment and prevention.

Neuropharmacological Imaging for Addiction

Background: - Functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques have allowed researchers to map and study how the brain works when at rest and when engaged in specific tasks. MRI scans have provided more information about how drugs affect the brain, and about how drug addiction changes the brain and influences behavior, mood, and thinking processes. To better understand the underlying mechanism of drug addiction and to develop strategies for more effective treatment, researchers are interested in developing new MRI techniques to study the effects of addiction on the brain. Objectives: - To develop new functional and structural MRI techniques, and to evaluate their potential use in brain imaging studies related to addiction. Eligibility: * Individuals between 18 and 80 years of age. * Participants may be smokers or nonsmokers, and may use drugs or not use drugs. Design: * During the initial screening, participants will complete questionnaires about family and personal history, drug use, and other information as required by the researchers. Participants who will be asked to complete tasks during the MRI scan will be shown how to perform these tasks before the scanning session. * Before each study session, participants may be asked to complete some or all of the following: questions about their drug use during the last week, a breathalyzer test, a urine drug-use assessment, a urine pregnancy test, or a measure of carbon monoxide. Participants will also provide blood samples before the start of the scan. * For each scanning session, participants will have an MRI scan that will last approximately 2 hours. * MRI scans may include specific tasks to be performed during the scan, or an experiment that studies the brain's response to carbon dioxide....

Semaglutide for Opioid Addiction

The goal of this clinical trial is to learn if semaglutide can reduce illicit opioid use in adults in outpatient treatment for opioid use disorder, and who are receiving either buprenorphine or methadone maintenance treatment. The main question it aims to answer is: • Does semaglutide increase the likelihood that participants will refrain from using illicit and nonprescribed opioids? The investigators will compare semaglutide to a placebo (a needle prick that contains no drug) to see if semaglutide works to reduce use of illicit and nonprescribed opioids. The participants will: * Take semaglutide or a placebo every week for 12 weeks * Visit the clinic every week for urine drug screening and pregnancy testing, vital signs, and to complete mental health and drug use questionnaires * Complete smartphone surveys sent at set times during the study

Combatting the rise of the opioid epidemic is a central challenge of U.S. health care policy. A promising approach for improving welfare and decreasing medical costs of people with substance abuse disorders is offering incentive payments for healthy behaviors. This approach, broadly known as "contingency management" in the medical literature, has repeatedly shown to be effective in treating substance abuse. However, the use of incentives by treatment facilities remains extremely low. Furthermore, it is not well understood how to design optimal incentives to treat opioid abuse. This project will conduct a randomized evaluation of two types of dynamically adjusting incentive schedules for people with opioid use disorders or cocaine use disorders: "escalating" schedules where incentive amounts increase with success to increase incentive power, and "de-escalating" schedules where incentive amounts decrease with success to improve incentive targeting. Both schemes are implemented with a novel "turnkey" mobile application, making them uniquely low-cost, low-hassle, and scalable. Effects will be measured on abstinence outcomes, including longest duration of abstinence and the percentage of negative drug tests. In combination with survey data, variation from the experiment will shed light on the barriers to abstinence more broadly and inform the understanding of optimal incentive design.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of a peer-led, brief, behavioral intervention to improve adherence to medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) and reduce polysubstance use among patients with OUD and polysubstance use in an underserved, rural area. Poverty and opioid addiction are interrelated and chronic problems which have not been addressed adequately. The Therapeutic Workplace could treat the many adults with opioid use disorder who are unemployed and live in poverty. The Therapeutic Workplace pays participants to work. To promote drug abstinence, the Therapeutic Workplace arranges employment-based abstinence reinforcement in which participants are required to provide drug-free urine samples to maintain maximum wages. Many studies have shown that employment-based abstinence reinforcement in the Therapeutic Workplace can promote and maintain drug abstinence. Recently, the investigators showed that abstinence-contingent wage supplements in the Therapeutic Workplace could promote drug abstinence and employment and reduce poverty. However, the investigators have not demonstrated the real-world impacts of the Therapeutic Workplace. The Therapeutic Workplace requires two modifications to produce real world impacts. 1. The investigators must develop a real-world version of the Therapeutic Workplace that community treatment programs can implement. 2. The investigators must reduce the costs of maintaining employment-based abstinence reinforcement. This application seeks to develop and evaluate a low-cost Therapeutic Workplace that community treatment programs can implement and that addresses the persistent nature of opioid addiction and poverty. The investigators propose to conduct a Stage III study in which a community clinic (REACH Health Services) adapts and implements the Therapeutic Workplace intervention. To improve the feasibility of this intervention, the investigators will use low-cost abstinence-contingent wage supplements to maintain abstinence. The investigators propose to conduct a randomized controlled study to evaluate the effectiveness of the low-cost abstinence-contingent wage supplements in a community Therapeutic Workplace to maintain long-term drug abstinence and employment, and to reduce poverty in adults with opioid use disorder. All participants will be invited to attend a 4-week induction period and 48 weeks of support by an employment specialist. At the end of a 4-week induction period, REACH unemployed methadone or buprenorphine patients with opioid use disorder who meet the Induction Period inclusion criteria (N=225) will be randomly assigned to a "Usual Care Control," an "Initiation Only," or an "Initiation and Maintenance" group. All groups will be offered methadone or buprenorphine treatment and an employment specialist for 48 weeks. "Initiation Only" and "Initiation and Maintenance" participants will earn high magnitude abstinence-contingent wage supplements during a 24-week Initiation period (weeks 1-24). "Initiation and Maintenance" participants will also earn low-magnitude abstinence-contingent wage supplements during a 24-week Maintenance period (weeks 25-48). The investigators will base the primary outcome measures on assessments conducted every four weeks of the Maintenance period. If low-cost abstinence-contingent wage supplements in the community Therapeutic Workplace maintain drug abstinence and employment and decrease poverty, community drug abuse treatment clinics could apply this intervention widely as a long-term maintenance treatment for unemployed adults with opioid use disorder.

Background: People with opioid-use disorder (OUD) might benefit from having more treatment drugs to choose from. A new drug, TRV734, could be used like methadone to treat OUD. It might not have as many side effects. Objective: To test if TRV734 relieves withdrawal symptoms and has fewer side effects than oxycodone in people with OUD. Eligibility: People ages 18-75 who have been receiving daily treatment with methadone for opioid use disorder for at least 3 months Design: Participants will be screened under Protocol 415. They will be screened with: Medical, social, and psychiatric history Physical exam Electrocardiogram (ECG). For this, sticky pads will be placed on the participant s chest to monitor their heartbeat. Blood and urine tests Participants will stay in a residential unit for 13-21 days. Most days, participants will receive their regular daily dose of methadone. On 4 or 5 occasions, 3-4 days apart, participants will skip two doses of methadone in a row. About 4 hours after they skip the second dose, they will have an IV catheter inserted with a needle so that blood samples can be taken. They will take capsules of either oxycodone, a placebo, or the study drug. They will have an ECG. They will complete questionnaires. Their blood pressure, pupil size, and alertness will be tested. They will then take their usual dose of methadone. Participants will give daily urine and breath samples.

Study Description: Despite the availability of pharmacotherapy for some substance use disorders, relapse vulnerability is still a significant issue. This suggests medications with alternative mechanisms of action should be explored to address this unmet need. Substantial preclinical research indicates that orexin antagonism blunts the internally and externally triggered motivation to attain abused substances. This research project will translate these preclinical findings into the clinical domain by administering the FDA approved orexin antagonist, suvorexant, to those with a substance use disorder. Suvorexant s ability to blunt neurobiological correlates of substance misuse will be assessed. This will be assessed following acute and repeated drug administration. Baseline individual differences will be considered to determine whether neurobiological variance influences suvorexant s impact in those with nicotine dependence. In an independent arm, the interaction between suvorexant and a dopamine agonist (methylphenidate) on cognitive function will be assessed in non-smoking individuals. Objectives: The objective is to determine the acute and chronic impact of the orexin antagonist, suvorexant, on neurobiological and behavioral factors linked with substance use disorders. Whether such effects are mediated by baseline characteristics will be tested. Given suvorexant is an FDA approved treatment for insomnia, sleep will be evaluated as well in the nicotine dependent arm. Endpoints: In nicotine-dependent individuals, suvorexant s impact on brain function will be assessed several ways by evaluating: 1) resting function, 2) reactivity to drug cues, 3) reactivity to non-drug related cognitive tasks. Sleep and nicotine use will be measured throughout the study period. In those without nicotine-dependence, the impact of suvorexant and the interaction of acute methylphenidate and suvorexant on brain function will be assessed. This arm will provide insight into how suvorexant impacts reward/cognition as well as impacts the pharmacological influence of methylphenidate on those same measures. Study Population:\<TAB\> Nicotine dependence arm:140 subjects; Volunteers who are between the ages of 18-60 and are daily smokers/vapers. Control arm: 80 subjects; Volunteers who are between the ages of 18-60 and are non-smokers/vapers This study will be conducted at the NIDA-IRP, Biomedical Research Center, in Baltimore, MD. Description of Study Intervention: Nicotine dependence arm: Suvorexant at 10 mg single dose, and Suvorexant at 10 mg daily for approximately 7 days. Control arm: 1. Tolerability visit with one MRI scan post-20mg methylphenidate, 4 acute drug administration (6-14 days in randomized order: 1. Placebo + placebo; 2. 20mg suvorexant + Placebo; 3. Placebo + 40mg methylphenidate; 4. 20 mg suvorexant + 40mg methylphenidate max) Study Duration: 5 years Participant Duration: 1-2 months

This is a research study to assess the effectiveness of a peer-led collaborative care model for integrating treatment for substance use and or mental health disorders into HIV care settings. Depending on whether or not participants enroll in this study, participants will be assigned randomly (by chance, like drawing a number from a hat) to one of two groups. In group 1, participants would receive usual clinical care. In group 2, participants would work with a peer-case manager who would help support participants to engage in substance use or mental health disorder care. Regardless of the group participants are in, participants will fill out a survey when first enrolled in the study, and then again 12 months later.

The goal of this clinical trial is to evaluate the effectiveness of a social network intervention to recruit people who inject drugs and their networks for HIV testing and linkage to HIV prevention and treatment services in Maryland. Study aims are to determine the effectiveness of a social network driven intervention to increase: * HIV testing (primary); * PrEP knowledge; * Uptake of HIV services and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP); * Uptake of medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) initiation. Eligible participants who access syringe service programs (SSPs) serving two counties in Maryland and their risk network members (NMs) will be recruited using an established network inventory and coupon recruitment method. When an index successfully recruits NMs, the index-NM cluster will be randomized to either a peer-educator intervention arm or an equal-attention control arm. Index participants randomized to the peer-educator intervention arm will complete a training program adapted with stakeholder input to context that emphasizes effective communication, frequent HIV testing, and awareness of evidence-based HIV prevention and treatment services. An important innovation to the network intervention will be training indexes to use and distribute HIV self-test kits and naloxone to their NMs. Index participants randomized to the equal-attention control arm will receive training sessions focused on the opioid overdose epidemic and will not include any training to serve as a peer educator. All participants (indexes and NMs) will complete study assessments at baseline and at 3 and 9 months. We will compare the peer-educator intervention group and the equal-attention control group on rates of HIV testing, knowledge of PrEP options and resources, and rates of initiation of HIV treatment, PrEP, and MOUD treatment since the previous assessment (past 3 or 6 months).

The goal of this clinical trial is to test an intervention to reduce stigma among people living with HIV who use opioids and cocaine. The main question it aims to answer is: - Does reducing internalized stigma about HIV and/or drug use lead to improved HIV care outcomes? After a year spent adapting an existing intervention to be applied specifically among people living with HIV who use substances, 70 participants will be randomized to receive either treatment-as-usual or the newly adapted intervention. The intervention itself will consist of five one-on-one sessions with a trained interventionist to discuss and work through the stigmas people commonly associate with HIV and/or substance use.

Purpose: This 5-year R01 study will elucidate the role of maturational change across adolescence in neural connectivity and physiological stress responses in the relationship between anxiety and adverse pathways to substance use (APSU). Participants: Children (N=200) aged 12-14 with symptoms of anxiety and their legal caregiver will be recruited from clinical and community sources. Procedures: Youth participants will complete several questionnaires and interviews, undergo neuroimaging while performing cognitive tasks, and have their heart rate and skin conductance monitored during a mildly stressful task. Caregivers will complete several questionnaires.

The goal of this treatment study is to learn about the mental health, substance use and physical health outcomes associated with participating in the EASE holistic behavioral health and wellness program for individuals identifying as LGBTQ+ and/or living with HIV. The main questions it aims to answer are: 1. Do important health outcomes, including substance use, mental health and social support related outcomes of individuals living with HIV and/or identifying as LGBTQ who participated in the holistic behavioral health and wellness program change after study participation? 2. Does a tailored approach to meet the specific needs of different subpopulations including 1) older (40+) PLWH and/or LGBTQ individuals with or at risk for additional health comorbidities and 2) PLWH and/or LGBTQ young adults (18-40) improve health outcomes including improvement in health and health behaviors . Participants will be asked to: * participate in 6 months of behavioral health treatment tailored to their needs, which may include individual counseling, group counseling, case management, peer support, and related education. * Complete surveys at the time of study entry and 6 months later to measure changes in health outcomes over time.

Adolescents in residential substance use treatment have serious substance-related problems and poor outcomes following discharge: follow-up studies indicate that 60% of adolescents treated in residential treatment will relapse within the first 90 days. Parenting practices have been established as a critical predictor of adolescents' substance use outcomes and likelihood of relapse following treatments, but parents are notoriously difficult to engage in adolescent substance use treatment. Findings such as these provide strong justification for targeting parents of adolescents in residential substance use treatment via easily accessible interventions. This study tests the effectiveness of a technology-assisted parenting intervention called Parent SMART (Substance Misuse among Adolescents in Residential Treatment). The intervention combines an off-the-shelf computer program that teaches parenting skills called Parenting Wisely, four telehealth coaching sessions, and a networking forum that allows parents to connect with a clinical expert and with other parents. The investigators will compare adolescents who receive standard residential substance use treatment to adolescents who receive the same treatment plus whose parents receive Parent SMART. Investigators will test the comparative effectiveness of Parent SMART versus residential treatment as usual on parental monitoring and communication, adolescent substance use (i.e., days of substance use and substance-related problems), and substance-related high-risk behaviors (i.e., school-related problems, criminal involvement, externalizing behavior). The investigators will also test whether improvements in parenting partially mediate any observed changes in adolescent substance use and other high-risk behaviors.

How do Substance Addiction clinical trials work?

After a researcher reviews your profile, they may choose to invite you in to a screening appointment, where they'll determine if you meet 100% of the eligibility requirements. If you do, you'll be sorted into one of the treatment groups, and receive your study drug. For some trials, there is a chance you'll receive a placebo. What does the "phase" of a clinical trial mean?

The phase of a trial reveals what stage the drug is in to get approval for a specific condition. Phase 1 trials are the trials to collect safety data in humans. Phase 2 trials are those where the drug has some data showing safety in humans, but where further human data is needed on drug effectiveness. Phase 3 trials are in the final step before approval. The drug already has data showing both safety and effectiveness. As a general rule, Phase 3 trials are more promising than Phase 2, and Phase 2 trials are more promising than phase 1.
