What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial explores whether a virtual reality headset and/or aromatherapy (essential oil therapy) can reduce pain, anxiety, and embarrassment during a prostate biopsy. Participants will be divided into groups to experience virtual reality, aromatherapy, both, or just the standard procedure. The goal is to determine if these tools make the process more comfortable than the usual method. Men scheduled for a prostate biopsy who wish to see if these methods alleviate discomfort might be suitable for this trial. As an unphased trial, it offers participants the chance to explore innovative methods for enhancing comfort during medical procedures.

Do I need to stop taking my current medications for this trial?

The trial protocol does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. However, if you are on medication that lowers the threshold for seizures, you may not be eligible to participate.

What prior data suggests that virtual reality and aromatherapy are safe for reducing pain and anxiety during prostate cancer biopsy?

Research shows that both virtual reality (VR) and aromatherapy are generally safe for managing pain and anxiety. Studies have found that using a VR headset during procedures like prostate biopsies reduces pain and anxiety without harmful side effects. Participants typically handle VR well, with no serious health issues reported.

Aromatherapy, especially with lavender oil, significantly lowers pain and anxiety during prostate biopsies. Like VR, aromatherapy is well-tolerated, with few negative effects reported in various studies.

While specific data on using VR and aromatherapy together is lacking, both treatments have individually proven safe and effective. This suggests that combining them is unlikely to create new safety concerns.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about these treatments for prostate cancer biopsy because they aim to enhance patient comfort and reduce anxiety. Unlike the standard biopsy procedure, which can be quite stressful, the virtual reality headset immerses patients in calming, virtual environments. This is paired with meditative breathing exercises that help manage stress in real-time. Meanwhile, the aromatherapy treatment introduces soothing scents like peppermint and lavender, known for their calming effects. By combining these innovative approaches, researchers hope to make the biopsy experience less daunting and more patient-friendly.

What evidence suggests that this trial's treatments could be effective for reducing pain, anxiety, and embarrassment during a prostate cancer biopsy?

This trial will compare the effects of using a virtual reality (VR) headset, aromatherapy, and a combination of both during prostate biopsies. Research has shown that a VR headset can reduce pain during these procedures. Studies have found VR particularly effective in managing pain for more invasive procedures like prostate biopsies. Patients reported feeling less pain and anxiety when using VR during their biopsies.

Aromatherapy, especially with lavender essential oil, has also been shown to lower anxiety and pain for patients undergoing prostate biopsies. Several studies suggest that the scent of lavender can have a calming effect, making the procedure more comfortable.

Combining VR and aromatherapy, as tested in this trial, might enhance these benefits, potentially offering even greater relief from pain and anxiety during a prostate biopsy. While more research is needed, early findings are promising for patients seeking non-drug ways to ease discomfort.23567

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?

This trial is for individuals undergoing a transperineal prostate biopsy, typically done to diagnose prostate cancer. Participants should be willing to potentially use virtual reality (VR) headsets and aromatherapy patches during the procedure. Specific eligibility criteria are not provided, but usually include age range, health status, and no prior adverse reactions to similar interventions.

Inclusion Criteria

I am male.
Patient signed and dated informed consent form on Redcap agreeing to participate in the study
I am scheduled for a prostate biopsy through the skin between the anus and scrotum.

Exclusion Criteria

Patient has a known psychiatric or mental illness that would impede use of the VR device or aromatherapy patch
Patient has severe hearing or vision problems that would impair use of the VR headset (under the physician's discretion)
Patient has a history of reactions to noxious odors

Timeline for a Trial Participant

Screening

Participants are screened for eligibility to participate in the trial

1-2 weeks

Treatment

Participants undergo a transperineal prostate biopsy with either a VR headset, aromatherapy patch, both, or standard of care

1 day
1 visit (in-person)

Follow-up

Participants complete a survey immediately after the biopsy to assess pain, fear, and embarrassment

up to 30 minutes

What Are the Treatments Tested in This Trial?

Interventions

  • Aromatherapy
  • Virtual Reality Headset
Trial Overview The study is testing whether using VR headsets and/or aromatherapy patches can help reduce pain, anxiety, and embarrassment compared to just getting the standard care during a prostate biopsy. Patients will be randomly assigned into four groups: one with VR only, one with aromatherapy only, one with both VR and aromatherapy, and a control group receiving standard care.

In a pilot study involving 46 cancer patients, adjunctive aromatherapy massage did not show statistically significant improvements in mood, quality of life, or physical symptoms compared to conventional care alone, although both groups reported improvements.
Despite the lack of measurable benefits, patients expressed high satisfaction with the aromatherapy treatment and a desire to continue, indicating potential value in patient experience even if clinical outcomes were not significantly different.
