Harmony & Health Program for Mental Health
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial aims to determine if the Harmony & Health Program, which combines yoga and Christian spirituality, can benefit mental health. The program targets Black adults who are sedentary. Participants will either join the yoga and spirituality program or attend health education sessions. It suits those living in Northeast Texas who exercise infrequently and have a BMI of 25 or higher. As an unphased trial, this study provides a unique opportunity to explore innovative approaches to enhancing mental health.
Will I have to stop taking my current medications?
The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications.
What prior data suggests that the Harmony & Health Program is safe?
Research on the Harmony & Health program, which combines yoga and Christian spirituality, shows that the yoga component is generally safe. A review of 94 studies involving over 8,000 participants found that most individuals handle yoga well. Although specific safety data for the faith-based component is lacking, similar programs have been used without major issues. Overall, the program appears safe based on the available evidence.12345
Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Researchers are excited about the Harmony & Health program for mental health because it uniquely combines yoga practices with Christian spirituality, offering a holistic approach that integrates physical, mental, and spiritual wellness. Unlike typical treatments for mental health, which often rely on medication or standard therapy sessions, this program encourages participants to engage in activities that promote mindfulness and spiritual connection. This innovative blend could offer individuals a more personalized and potentially transformative experience, tapping into aspects of healing not traditionally addressed by conventional methods.
What evidence suggests that the Harmony & Health program could be effective for mental health?
Research shows that combining yoga with Christian spirituality can improve mental health. In this trial, participants in the "Health and Harmony" arm will engage in a program that combines these practices. Studies have found that such mind-body practices can reduce stress, depression, and anxiety. In past research, participants reported improvements in self-care, mindfulness, and sleep. Spiritual practices adapted to fit different cultures have also been linked to better mental health. Overall, evidence suggests this approach could enhance mental well-being.23678
