Trial Summary

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It is best to discuss this with the trial coordinators or your doctor.

What data supports the effectiveness of the treatment Green Activity Program for Dementia?

Research shows that regular exercise can improve mood, health, and quality of life for people with dementia. Programs like the tailored activity program and home exercise interventions have been effective in reducing symptoms and improving well-being in dementia patients.12345

Is the Green Activity Program for Dementia safe for humans?

The Seniors Exercise Park program, similar to the Green Activity Program, was found to be safe for people with dementia, with no falls or adverse events reported during a 12-week study. Participants enjoyed the program, and it was feasible with proper supervision and individualized communication.678910

How is the Green Activity Program for Dementia different from other treatments for dementia?

The Green Activity Program for Dementia is unique because it focuses on prescribing nature-based activities, which may include gardening and other outdoor exercises, to improve the quality of life for people with dementia. This approach is different from traditional treatments that often emphasize medication or indoor physical activities.3581112

What is the purpose of this trial?

The purpose of this study is to test the Green Activity Program that was designed with people living with memory challenges and their study partners to see if it can be done and if they enjoy the program. "Green activities" are nature activities that the person enjoys and can be done with other people or pets. For example, dog walking, hiking, outdoor yoga, and gardening are all green activities. The purpose of the program is to help people living with memory challenges participate in nature activities they enjoy. The goal of the program is to help people stay active and improve their health and well-being.

Findings from Research

The PrAISED intervention, which involved up to 50 therapy sessions focusing on exercise and functional activities for adults with early dementia or mild cognitive impairment, did not show significant improvements in daily living activities, physical activity, or quality of life compared to usual care after 12 months.
Although the intervention group experienced fewer falls (79 falls) compared to the control group (200 falls), the difference was not statistically significant, indicating that the exercise program did not effectively reduce fall risk or improve overall health outcomes.
Promoting Activity, Independence, and Stability in Early Dementia and mild cognitive impairment (PrAISED): randomised controlled trial.Harwood, RH., Goldberg, SE., Brand, A., et al.[2023]
Patients with dementia who underwent inpatient rehabilitation after a hip fracture showed significantly lower cognitive function and rehabilitation outcomes compared to those without dementia, indicating that dementia impacts recovery effectiveness.
Despite these challenges, patients with dementia had a shorter hospital stay and a higher likelihood of needing discharge to residential aged care facilities or home with carer support, highlighting the importance of tailored post-rehabilitation care for this population.
The impact of dementia on rehabilitation outcomes following hip fracture.Loh, YL., Wicks, J., Alexander, T.[2023]
In an observational study involving 90 veterans with dementia, continuous activity programming led to increased engagement in activities, reduced use of psychotropic medications, improved nutrition, and higher family satisfaction without needing extra staff.
When additional staff were available, more intensive activity programming further decreased agitation and improved sleep quality, suggesting that while benefits can be achieved without staffing changes, having more staff enhances the positive effects.
