Contingency Management for Methamphetamine Addiction
(RCT (05) Trial)
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial explores a treatment called contingency management to help reduce methamphetamine use. The goal is to understand how reducing meth use can benefit health and social lives, potentially improving future treatment development. Participants will be divided into two groups: one group earns rewards for providing drug-free urine samples, while the other provides samples without rewards. This trial suits individuals who have recently used meth, meet specific criteria for methamphetamine use disorder, and seek treatment. As an unphased trial, it offers participants the chance to contribute to innovative research that could shape future treatment options.
What prior data suggests that Contingency Management is safe for methamphetamine addiction treatment?
Research has shown that contingency management is a safe and well-accepted method to help people reduce methamphetamine use. Studies indicate it is among the most effective methods for this purpose. As individuals continue with this treatment, they typically attend more sessions and further decrease their drug use. A 2020 review of 27 studies found that this approach offers long-term benefits for managing methamphetamine use disorder. Reports of harmful effects are not significant, making it a promising option for those seeking to reduce methamphetamine use.12345
Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Researchers are excited about Contingency Management for methamphetamine addiction because it offers a unique approach compared to traditional treatments like cognitive-behavioral therapy and pharmacotherapy. Unlike these standard methods, Contingency Management provides tangible rewards, like payments, for producing drug-free urine samples, directly motivating individuals to abstain from drug use. This method taps into the brain's reward system, making it a potentially powerful tool in encouraging long-term behavioral change. By harnessing positive reinforcement, this approach could lead to higher success rates in maintaining sobriety, which is a major challenge with current treatments.
What evidence suggests that contingency management is effective for methamphetamine addiction?
Research has shown that contingency management (CM), which participants in this trial may receive, effectively helps people reduce methamphetamine use. Studies have found that CM works by rewarding individuals who provide drug-free urine samples. Evidence from various clinics and groups, including men who have sex with men (MSM), supports this method. Reviews also highlight CM as one of the best-proven treatments for methamphetamine addiction. Overall, CM offers a promising approach for treating methamphetamine use disorder.13678

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?
This trial is for adults over 18 with moderate to severe Methamphetamine Use Disorder (MUD), who have used methamphetamine in the week before screening and tested positive for it. They must be willing to commit to a 12-week intervention and follow-up, seeking treatment for meth use. Those on buprenorphine or methadone for Opioid Use Disorder can also join.Inclusion Criteria
