What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial explores how a music mindfulness program can help manage stress for People of African Descent (PADs) dealing with anxiety and depression during COVID-19. Participants will try different meditation versions: one with live music, one with headphones, and one fully virtual. The goal is to determine if adding music to mindfulness can enhance stress relief. It suits PAD community members with anxiety or depression symptoms who haven't regularly practiced meditation. As an unphased study, this trial provides a unique opportunity to explore innovative stress management techniques in a supportive environment.

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications.

What prior data suggests that this music mindfulness program is safe for stress management in PADs?

Research has shown that music mindfulness programs can safely and effectively manage stress, anxiety, and depression. One study found that listening to music while practicing mindfulness positively affects the brain and heart, helping with anxiety and depression. Another study discovered that music does not detract from meditation and can make it more engaging.

These programs have been successfully used online, demonstrating their effectiveness and ease of use. No reports of serious side effects suggest that most people handle these programs well. However, discussing any concerns with a healthcare provider is always advisable.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about the Music Mindfulness Program for mental health issues because it explores unique methods of enhancing traditional meditation with music. Unlike standard treatments, which often rely on medication or cognitive therapies, this program integrates live music and mindfulness, potentially offering a more immersive and soothing experience. The trial includes diverse delivery methods: in-person with live music, in-person with headphones, and fully virtual sessions, allowing flexibility and accessibility for participants. This innovative approach might help individuals who struggle with conventional treatments by providing a calming and engaging environment to support mental health.

What evidence suggests that this trial's treatments could be effective for anxiety and depression?

Research has shown that music mindfulness can help manage anxiety and depression. Studies suggest that incorporating music into mindfulness exercises affects brain and heart activity, potentially reducing these symptoms. One study found that combining mindfulness with music lowered depression and anxiety while improving sleep quality. Another study highlighted the immediate calming effects of music mindfulness on both mind and body, demonstrating its potential to reduce stress. This trial will explore various methods of delivering the Music Mindfulness Program, including in-person sessions with live music, in-person sessions with headphones, and virtual participation. This evidence suggests that music mindfulness could effectively address mental health issues, particularly in managing stress-related conditions.12367

Published Research Related to This Trial

A randomized controlled trial with 50 university students showed that mindfulness training delivered via videoconference significantly reduced depression more than podcast-based training over a 7-week period.
Both interventions effectively increased mindfulness and life satisfaction, but the benefits of home practice were notably stronger in the videoconferencing group, suggesting its potential as a valuable tool for addressing mental health issues during the pandemic.

In a study involving 144 patients with bipolar disorder undergoing Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), adverse effects (AEs) were reported by 29 patients, with most occurring within the first three weeks and decreasing thereafter.
Despite the occurrence of AEs, most patients viewed them as part of a therapeutic process rather than harmful, indicating that while AEs are present, they are generally not serious and can be perceived positively in the context of treatment.

Mindfulness-based therapies, particularly Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), have been shown to effectively improve psychological health, manage pain, and reduce anxiety symptoms.
MBCT is specifically recommended as an additional treatment for unipolar depression, highlighting its role in supporting mental health alongside traditional therapies.
