Trial Summary

What is the purpose of this trial?

This is a study that aims to test a coping skills intervention delivered via brief animated videos for Chinese and Chinese American college students.

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications.

What data supports the effectiveness of the treatment Dialectical Behavior Therapy skills video intervention for emotion regulation?

Research shows that Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills training, including modules on emotion regulation, can help improve emotional difficulties in people with various mental health conditions. Studies have found that DBT skills training is linked to better emotion regulation and reduced symptoms, suggesting it could be effective for managing emotions.12345

Is the Skills Video Intervention for Emotion Regulation safe for humans?

The studies on Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills, including video interventions, suggest they are generally safe for humans. These interventions have been used in various settings and populations, such as college students and individuals with cognitive challenges, without reports of significant safety concerns.16789

How is the Skills Video Intervention for Emotion Regulation different from other treatments for emotional dysregulation?

The Skills Video Intervention for Emotion Regulation is unique because it uses brief, animated videos to teach Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills, making it a scalable and accessible option for improving emotion regulation. Unlike traditional in-person DBT sessions, this video format can be easily distributed and accessed, potentially reaching a wider audience and offering flexibility in how and when individuals engage with the material.15679

Findings from Research

In a study of 70 individuals with borderline personality disorder undergoing dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), those who frequently used DBT skills were less likely to self-harm and had lower dropout rates, indicating that skills practice is crucial for treatment success.
Higher self-efficacy was also linked to reduced self-harm, suggesting that building confidence in using DBT skills is important, while factors like therapeutic alliance and treatment credibility did not independently affect self-harm or dropout rates.

In a pilot study involving six participants, the modified Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skills System (DBT-SS) showed a decrease in challenging behaviors and an increase in overall functioning after 48 therapy sessions, indicating its potential effectiveness for individuals with cognitive difficulties.
Participants also experienced a reduction in hospital admissions, suggesting that DBT-SS may help improve emotional regulation and reduce the need for emergency care in this population.

A pilot study involving five Latinx participants indicated that online dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) skills groups significantly reduced emotional dysregulation, showing a large effect size compared to placebo sessions.
While depression symptoms improved with online DBT, anxiety levels did not show the same reduction, suggesting that while DBT is effective for emotional regulation, it may need adjustments to better address anxiety in this population.
