What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial aims to determine if the body absorbs nutrients from Tangerine tomatoes more effectively than those from red tomatoes. Researchers seek to understand if these absorption differences can influence inflammation, the body's response to harmful stimuli. Participants will consume either Tangerine tomato juice or red tomato juice to provide this data. Suitable candidates are individuals without chronic health issues such as diabetes or arthritis and who maintain normal cholesterol levels. As an unphased trial, this study offers a unique opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking research on nutrition and inflammation.

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

The trial requires that you stop taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (like Aspirin, Advil, Tylenol, Aleve) for 72 hours before each day-long visit.

Is there any evidence suggesting that this trial's treatments are likely to be safe?

Research has shown that tomato products, including juices from both red and Tangerine tomatoes, are generally safe to consume. Tangerine tomatoes contain a type of lycopene that the body absorbs more easily, similar to the lycopene found in individuals who consume many tomatoes. Studies suggest that Tangerine tomatoes might help reduce inflammation.

Red tomatoes are also safe to consume. Individuals who eat a lot of tomatoes and tomato products often have a lower risk of certain long-term diseases. Drinking tomato juice can improve overall nutrition and may help lower blood pressure.

In summary, both Tangerine and red tomato juices are well-tolerated and may offer health benefits. They are safe choices for most people looking to increase their intake of healthy nutrients.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about using red and tangerine tomato juices for dietary health impact because these juices are rich in unique antioxidants and nutrients that might offer health benefits beyond standard dietary supplements. Unlike typical vitamin supplements or processed health drinks, red tomato juice is packed with lycopene, a powerful antioxidant linked to heart health. Tangerine tomato juice, on the other hand, is high in a different form of lycopene that may be more easily absorbed by the body, potentially enhancing its health benefits. These natural juices might offer a simple, tasty way to boost health without the need for artificial additives or complex formulations.

What evidence suggests that this trial's treatments could be effective for dietary health impact?

This trial will compare the effects of Tangerine tomato juice and Red tomato juice on dietary health. Research has shown that Tangerine tomato juice is easier for the body to absorb than Red tomato juice due to its higher amount of bioavailable lycopene. A study from The Ohio State University found that the lycopene in Tangerine tomatoes is about 8.5 times more absorbable than in red tomatoes. This enhanced absorption might lead to improved health benefits, such as reducing inflammation, which is the body's response to harmful substances. Additionally, Tangerine tomatoes have demonstrated stronger effects in reducing inflammation in lab tests compared to red tomatoes. However, Red tomato juice is also rich in nutrients and has been linked to a lower risk of long-term diseases, like cancer, due to its antioxidants, including lycopene. Both types of tomato juice offer health benefits, but Tangerine tomato juice might provide more lycopene benefits because of its superior absorption.26789

What Are the Treatments Tested in This Trial?

Interventions

  • Red tomato juice
  • Tangerine tomato juice
Trial Overview The study aims to compare how well the body absorbs carotenoids and flavonoids from red versus Tangerine-type tomatoes. It will also investigate if these different tomato types affect inflammation markers in the body. Participants will consume red tomato juice and Tangerine tomato juice at different times.
