Treatment Summary
Mupirocin is an antibiotic medication derived from the bacteria _Pseudomonas fluorescens_. It works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis and does not cause cross-resistance with other antibiotics. It is only available as a topical cream or ointment and is used to treat skin infections caused by _Staphylococcus aureus_ and _Streptococcus pyogenes_. It may also be used to eradicate nasal carriage of staphylococci when administered intranasally. It is marketed under the brand name Bactroban.

Effectiveness
How Bactroban Affects Patients
Mupirocin can kill certain types of bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes. It works by blocking the formation of proteins the bacteria need to survive. Generally, it takes a higher concentration of mupirocin to kill the bacteria than to stop its growth. Studies have shown that mupirocin is effective in treating impetigo and other skin infections in over 90% of patients. In some cases, bacteria can become resistant to mupirocin if they create a modified protein or get a gene from another bacteria that makes them resistant.
How Bactroban works in the body
Mupirocin works by binding to an enzyme that helps convert isoleucine and tRNA into a tRNA molecule. By blocking this enzyme, mupirocin stops bacteria from making proteins and RNA. It works quickly, killing 90-99% of bacteria after 24 hours.
When to interrupt dosage
The proposed quantity of Bactroban is contingent upon the determined disorder, including Communicable Diseases, Bacterial Infections and staphylococcus aurea colonization of the nasal passageway. The amount likewise fluctuates as per the technique of delivery (e.g. Ointment or Cream) featured in the table beneath.

Bactroban Toxicity & Overdose Risk
Taking too much mupirocin can be toxic, with an oral LD50 in rats of 5000 mg/kg. No tests have been done to see if mupirocin causes cancer. Mupirocin has not been found to cause mutation in animals or bacteria. When given to rats, no signs of fertility problems were noticed. Mupirocin has been found in breast milk, so pregnant women should be cautious when using it. However, studies have found that it is safe and effective for children aged 2 months to 16 years.
