Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) are among the most bothersome symptoms during cancer treatment according to children and their parents. Most children receiving highly emetogenic chemotherapy (HEC), including those receiving hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) conditioning, experience CIV despite receiving antiemetic prophylaxis. Olanzapine improves CINV control in adult cancer patients, has a track record of safe use in children with psychiatric illness, does not interact with chemotherapy and is inexpensive. We hypothesize that the addition of olanzapine to standard antiemetics will improve chemotherapy-induced vomiting (CIV) control in children receiving highly emetogenic chemotherapy

Enhanced Recovery Protocols for Perioperative Optimization

This REMAP Periop ERP domain study falls under the Periop Core Protocol, which compares the different recommended strategies for enhancing recovery through the use of various standard of care treatments before, during and after surgery in all patients with elective surgical encounters at UPMC who meet eligibility criteria. The ERP domain seeks to enhance recovery by optimizing strategies of perioperative care through evaluating combinations of perioperative treatment, which consists of preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative care. Gastric Decompression for Gynecologic Surgery

ML-Based Intervention for Vomiting in Pediatric Cancer

The goal of this single arm trial is to learn if a machine learning (ML) model predicting the risk of vomiting within the next 96 hours will impact vomiting outcomes in inpatient cancer pediatric patients. There is a tremendous clinical need for a noninvasive technique that can assess gastric electrical activity and would be repeatable without any exposure to radiation. Investigators developed a new technique allowing to use noninvasive methods to assess bioelectrical activity in the gastrointestinal system. This has enabled to characterize the normal and pathologic physiology of the stomach through the use of noninvasive magnetogastrogram (MGG) records. Primary hypothesis for this proposal is that analysis of gastric slow wave uncoupling and propagation in multichannel MGG discriminates between normal and pathological gastric electrical activity. Eventually, investigators envision this research leading to new insights for gastrointestinal conditions such as gastroparesis, functional dyspepsia and chronic idiopathic nausea that would inform clinical management of these debilitating diseases.

How much do Nausea clinical trials pay?

Each trial will compensate patients a different amount, but $50-100 for each visit is a fairly common range for Phase 2–4 trials (Phase 1 trials often pay substantially more). Further, most trials will cover the costs of a travel to-and-from the clinic.

How do Nausea clinical trials work?

After a researcher reviews your profile, they may choose to invite you in to a screening appointment, where they'll determine if you meet 100% of the eligibility requirements. If you do, you'll be sorted into one of the treatment groups, and receive your study drug. For some trials, there is a chance you'll receive a placebo. Across Nausea trials 30% of clinical trials have a placebo. Typically, you'll be required to check-in with the clinic every month or so. The average trial length for Nausea is 12 months.

How do I participate in a study as a "healthy volunteer"?

Not all studies recruit healthy volunteers: usually, Phase 1 studies do. What does the "phase" of a clinical trial mean?

The phase of a trial reveals what stage the drug is in to get approval for a specific condition. Phase 1 trials are the trials to collect safety data in humans. Phase 2 trials are those where the drug has some data showing safety in humans, but where further human data is needed on drug effectiveness. Phase 3 trials are in the final step before approval. The drug already has data showing both safety and effectiveness. As a general rule, Phase 3 trials are more promising than Phase 2, and Phase 2 trials are more promising than phase 1.

Do I need to be insured to participate in a Nausea medical study?

Clinical trials are almost always free to participants, and so do not require insurance. The only exception here are trials focused on cancer, because only a small part of the typical treatment plan is actually experimental. For these cancer trials, participants typically need insurance to cover all the non-experimental components.
