Virtual Reality for Chronic Pain Management
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial explores whether virtual reality (VR) can help teens manage chronic pain more effectively than the usual physical therapy conducted over video calls. The researchers aim to determine if VR use enhances teens' understanding of their treatment, increases their enjoyment, and improves their pain and mobility. The study includes different groups: one using custom VR (a tailored virtual reality program), another using off-the-shelf VR (a commercially available virtual reality system), and a control group continuing with standard virtual physiotherapy. Teens aged 12-18 with chronic pain, attending a specific outpatient clinic, capable of physical activity, and with internet access may be eligible to participate. As an unphased trial, this study provides a unique opportunity for teens to explore innovative pain management techniques and contribute to advancing treatment options.
Do I have to stop taking my current medications for the trial?
The trial requires that you have been on stable medication or therapy for at least one week before starting, meaning no new pain medications or therapies should be introduced during that time.
What prior data suggests that these virtual reality programs are safe for teens with chronic pain?
Research has shown that virtual reality (VR) is generally safe for managing long-term pain. Studies suggest that custom VR treatments can reduce pain and improve quality of life, and they are well-tolerated by both children and adults. Although experts do not fully understand the mechanisms, these treatments appear promising.
For ready-made VR options, research on older adults indicates they are mostly safe. Some individuals have reported minor issues like back pain, but these are uncommon. These VR systems are considered easy to use and integrate well into daily life.
In summary, both custom and ready-made VR treatments are generally safe, with minor risks that are rare and manageable.12345Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Researchers are excited about using virtual reality (VR) for chronic pain management because it offers an immersive experience that can distract the brain from pain signals. Unlike traditional treatments like medications and physical therapy that focus on directly altering pain pathways or increasing mobility, VR engages users in a virtual environment, potentially reducing pain perception through mental engagement and relaxation. The study tests both custom and off-the-shelf VR programs, which integrate VR sessions with usual care, aiming to enhance the effectiveness and accessibility of pain management options. This innovative approach could provide a non-invasive, drug-free alternative to help individuals manage chronic pain more effectively.
What evidence suggests that virtual reality could be effective for managing chronic pain in teens?
Research shows that virtual reality (VR) can help manage chronic pain. This trial will compare two VR approaches: Custom VR and Off the Shelf VR. Studies have found that special VR programs can greatly reduce pain and improve movement and daily activities. This holds true for both custom-made and store-bought VR systems. Evidence supports VR's positive effects on pain, daily functioning, and quality of life. Although more research is needed, current findings are promising for using VR to help teens with chronic pain.23678

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?
This trial is for teens aged 12-18 with chronic pain, who can speak and read English, are under care at a specific clinic, have stable medication/therapy, can move safely on their own, need at least 4 virtual physiotherapy sessions, and have internet access. It's not for those with seizure risks, major untreated mental illnesses or personality disorders, VR intolerance (like nausea), recent headaches/migraines or concussions.Inclusion Criteria

Timeline for a Trial Participant
Screening
Participants are screened for eligibility to participate in the trial
Treatment
Participants engage in either a custom VR program or an off-the-shelf VR program combined with standard virtual physiotherapy treatment, or just the standard virtual physiotherapy treatment, over 4 weeks.
Follow-up
Participants are monitored for safety and effectiveness after treatment, including assessments of pain intensity, physical functioning, and other outcomes.
What Are the Treatments Tested in This Trial?
Interventions
- Custom VR
- Off the Shelf VR
Trial Overview
The study tests if virtual reality programs designed for pain rehabilitation are user-friendly and effective in improving pain management and physical function in teens during COVID-19 compared to standard videoconference physiotherapy. Teens' experiences will be evaluated through questionnaires and interviews.
