Pumpkin Seed Extract for Overactive Bladder
What You Need to Know Before You Apply
What is the purpose of this trial?
This trial aims to determine if pumpkin seed oil extract can help individuals with overactive bladder issues. It focuses on bladder functions such as frequent urination or sudden urges, with or without leaks. Participants will take one pumpkin seed oil pill daily for 12 weeks. The trial seeks individuals who have experienced these bladder problems and are willing to try a dietary supplement without introducing other new treatments during this period. As an unphased trial, it offers participants the chance to explore a natural remedy for bladder issues without committing to other treatments.
Will I have to stop taking my current medications?
The trial does not specify if you need to stop your current medications, but you cannot start any new overactive bladder medications or supplements during the study or in the 3 months before joining.
What prior data suggests that pumpkin seed oil extract is safe for bladder function?
Research has shown that pumpkin seed oil extract is generally safe for people. One study found that using pumpkin seed extract is safe and well-tolerated, with no major risks for those using it to help with an overactive bladder. Another study reported that pumpkin seed oil improved urinary issues in people with an overactive bladder without causing serious side effects.
These findings suggest that most people can easily tolerate pumpkin seed oil extract. However, consulting a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement is always advisable, especially if other medications are being taken.12345Why are researchers excited about this trial?
Unlike the standard treatments for overactive bladder, which often include medications like anticholinergics or beta-3 adrenergic agonists, pumpkin seed extract offers a natural alternative. Researchers are excited about this treatment because it contains compounds that may help strengthen the bladder and improve urinary function without the common side effects associated with traditional medications, such as dry mouth or constipation. Additionally, the convenience of a once-daily oral supplement makes it an attractive option for those looking for a simple and natural way to manage their symptoms.
What evidence suggests that pumpkin seed oil extract might be an effective treatment for overactive bladder?
Research has shown that pumpkin seed oil extract, which participants in this trial will receive, can help with urinary issues such as overactive bladder (OAB). Studies have found that extracts from pumpkin seeds, particularly from the Cucurbita maxima type, significantly improve bladder symptoms. For instance, one study found that pumpkin seed oil reduced the Overactive Bladder Symptom Score (OABSS), which measures symptom severity. Another study demonstrated that a mix of pumpkin seed extract improved urinary incontinence. These findings suggest that pumpkin seed oil extract may benefit individuals with bladder problems.12367
Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?
This trial is for individuals with overactive bladder symptoms who are patients at Northwestern's IPHP. They must be willing to take a dietary supplement and not start other treatments for 12 weeks after beginning the pumpkin seed oil extract. People can't join if they have certain bladder issues, use similar supplements, don't speak English, or have had recent pelvic surgery.Inclusion Criteria
