What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial tests new methods to help Chinese and Latino/a immigrants manage diabetes more effectively. Researchers use mHealth DSMES videos (mobile health Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support videos) sent via text messages to provide education tailored to these communities. Participants will be divided into groups: some will receive these videos along with usual care, while others will receive only standard care. This trial may suit individuals with type 2 diabetes who speak English, Mandarin, Cantonese, or Spanish and have an HbA1c level of 8% or higher (a measure of blood sugar control). As an unphased trial, this study offers a unique opportunity to contribute to innovative diabetes management strategies tailored for diverse communities.

What prior data suggests that the mHealth DSMES videos are safe for diabetes management?

Research has shown that mobile health (mHealth) videos for managing diabetes are safe and easy to use. Studies have found that these videos help people manage their diabetes effectively without harm. They offer a convenient way for patients to learn about their condition, often leading to better health.

In past studies, participants using mHealth tools reported very few negative effects. Most found the experience positive and helpful for managing their diabetes. The videos are designed to be easy to understand and culturally relevant, aiding individuals in better health management.

Overall, using mHealth videos for diabetes education is both safe and a promising way to support diabetes care.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about this trial because it explores the use of mobile health (mHealth) videos and Community Health Worker (CHW)-enabled services to enhance diabetes management. Unlike the standard care options, which typically involve regular clinic visits and medication, this approach integrates culturally tailored educational videos delivered through text messages, making diabetes education more accessible and personalized. The combination of digital tools and community support aims to empower patients with diabetes, potentially improving adherence and health outcomes while reducing the need for frequent in-person consultations. By leveraging technology and community resources, this trial could pave the way for more flexible and patient-centered diabetes care options.

What evidence suggests that this trial's treatments could be effective for diabetes?

Research has shown that mobile health (mHealth) videos for Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support (DSMES) can improve diabetes management. In this trial, some participants will receive mHealth DSMES videos, which studies have found can lower blood sugar levels and enhance overall health. DSMES imparts essential knowledge and skills for effective diabetes management. When Community Health Workers (CHWs) support these mHealth videos, as demonstrated in one of the trial arms, they offer additional help and guidance, making diabetes control more manageable. These programs are particularly beneficial for diverse communities because they provide information tailored to specific cultural needs.1678
