What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial tests a mobile app called Living Free from Tobacco (LiFT) to help young adults quit nicotine and tobacco. The app has two versions: one builds psychological flexibility to support quitting, while the other provides educational content and resources about tobacco use and cessation. Participants will use the app and receive supportive text messages for three months. Individuals who have used nicotine or tobacco at least weekly in the past month and are interested in quitting might be a good fit for this study. As an unphased trial, this study presents a unique opportunity to explore innovative methods for quitting tobacco.

Do I have to stop taking my current medications to join the trial?

The trial does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. However, you cannot be using other tobacco cessation treatments at the time of screening, but you can start them during the study.

What prior data suggests that the LiFT app is safe for young adults?

Research has shown that mobile apps like Living Free from Tobacco (LiFT) can help people quit smoking. Although specific safety data for the LiFT A and LiFT B apps is unavailable, studies on similar apps suggest they are generally safe. These apps assist users by managing cravings, tracking progress, and maintaining motivation. They typically don't cause harmful side effects, as they provide information and support through smartphones.

This trial is in the "Not Applicable" phase, indicating minimal risk since it doesn't involve new drugs or invasive treatments. Instead, it uses digital tools to promote positive behavior changes. Prospective participants can expect a safe experience aimed at helping them quit smoking with support from the app.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about the Mobile Health Intervention for Tobacco Cessation because it leverages innovative app-based technology to help people quit smoking. Unlike traditional methods like nicotine replacement therapy or counseling, the LiFT app uses interactive games, exercises, and educational content to engage users, especially young adults, with a personalized approach. The app also incorporates Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) techniques, which are tailored to help users manage cravings and mental health challenges. Additionally, participants receive supportive text messages, enhancing user engagement and providing continuous motivation, making this a comprehensive and accessible tool for tobacco cessation.

What evidence suggests that this trial's treatments could be effective for tobacco cessation?

Research has shown that smartphone apps can significantly aid in quitting smoking. Studies have found that using a smoking cessation app can double the chances of quitting, especially for those who use it consistently for several weeks. For instance, the SmartQuit 2.0 app helped 21% of its users quit smoking, outperforming attempts without assistance. In this trial, participants will use different versions of the LiFT app, which provide educational resources and tools tailored to young adults. While not every app works for everyone, those offering educational resources and enhancing mental flexibility can be effective. Using an app might increase the chances of quitting smoking, potentially reducing the risk of death from any cause by 11% to 34%.56789
