Trial Summary

What is the purpose of this trial?

This is a pilot study to improve rates of germline genetic testing for black patients with aggressive prostate cancer as recommended by the updated guidelines by the National Cancer Comprehensive Network (NCCN) in 2018. In this study, consented patients will undergo a low-risk intervention of an educational session with a trained staff member on germline testing in prostate cancer and, if agreeable, subsequent germline cancer genetic testing via a commercial lab test.

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

The trial information does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It seems focused on educational sessions and genetic testing, so it's unlikely that your medications will be affected.

What data supports the effectiveness of the treatment Educational video for prostate cancer?

Research shows that educational videos can help patients understand prostate cancer screening and treatment, improve their participation in decision-making, and manage post-treatment complications effectively. Additionally, video education has been found to maintain high patient satisfaction and potentially reduce hospital discharge delays after surgery.12345

Is the educational video for prostate cancer safe for humans?

The educational video for prostate cancer is designed to help patients understand their treatment options and does not involve any physical treatment or medication, so it is generally safe for humans.16789

How does the educational video treatment for prostate cancer differ from other treatments?

The educational video treatment is unique because it focuses on providing patients with information about prostate cancer and its treatment options through an engaging and accessible format, helping them make informed decisions. Unlike traditional medical treatments, this approach emphasizes patient education and involvement in the decision-making process.1681011

Eligibility Criteria

This trial is for black or multiracial men including black, aged 18+, with high-risk prostate cancer. They should meet NCCN guidelines for germline testing and have a significant family history of certain cancers or a diagnosis of aggressive prostate cancer regardless of family history. Men who've already had genetic testing are excluded.

Inclusion Criteria

I am a man with low to intermediate risk prostate cancer and have a significant family history of cancer.
I am a man aged 18 or older.
I am a man with high-risk or very high-risk prostate cancer, including if it has spread to lymph nodes or is metastatic.

Findings from Research

A video intervention significantly increased knowledge about prostate cancer screening and treatment among 52 patients in the experimental group, compared to no change in the control group, indicating its effectiveness as an educational tool.
The video also influenced patients' preferences for prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening, with 31% of the experimental group changing their preference compared to only 2% in the control group, demonstrating its impact on patient decision-making without causing confusion or fear.

Patients with low socioeconomic status and/or low literacy face significant challenges in managing prostate cancer, highlighting the need for targeted educational programs to improve their understanding and treatment outcomes.
Involving practice nurses and health educators can enhance patient engagement in treatment decisions and improve posttreatment follow-up, leading to better management of complications and earlier diagnosis.

There is an increasing focus on the psychosocial challenges faced by prostate cancer patients, highlighting the need for educational and group interventions to address these issues.
Research has identified various unmet needs among prostate cancer patients, including information and support related to diagnosis, treatment, and quality of life, indicating significant areas for improvement in patient care.
