Study Summary

This trial will test if a home-based physical activity program can increase physical activity levels over 8 weeks.

Who is the study for?
This trial is for young adults aged 18-25 who are not very active, doing less than 90 minutes of exercise a week. They must be able to do a half-hour workout and read English. It's not for pregnant people, those without internet, or anyone advised against exercising by doctors due to health risks.Check my eligibility
What is being tested?
The study is testing if mixing up workouts at home can make people more active over eight weeks. Participants will either stick with the same exercises or try different ones regularly, and their activity levels will be tracked objectively.See study design
What are the potential side effects?
Since this trial involves physical activity, potential side effects might include muscle soreness, fatigue, or injury. However, these are common reactions to starting an exercise routine and usually decrease as fitness improves.

Experimental Treatment
Active Control
Group I: Physical activity variety interventionExperimental Treatment1 Intervention
Participants in the variety condition will be sent the link to their condition's website via email. The variety website will contain nine distinct high intensity interval training (HIIT) videos. The videos will be 30-minutes containing a five-minute warm-up, 20-minute workout, and a five-minute cool down. The website will emphasize the importance of having variety in one's physical activity routine. This will include reminders to have variety in selected workouts and the benefits associated with doing so. This emphasis will be supported through the counseling sessions provided to participants in the variety condition.
Group II: Physical activity consistency comparison conditionActive Control1 Intervention
Upon the completion of randomization, participants in the consistency condition will be sent the link to their condition's website via email. The consistency website will contain one HIIT video. The video will be 30-minutes and include a five-minute warm-up, 20-minute workout, and a five-minute cool down. The website will emphasize the importance of having consistency in one's physical activity routine. This will include reminders to be consistent in workouts and the benefits associated with doing so (Guiney & Machado, 2013). This emphasis will be supported through the counseling sessions provided to participants in the consistency condition.

What is the underlying purpose of this experiment?

"The principal aim of this investigation, which will measure progress on a weekly basis from the baseline until week 8, is to assess actigraphy. Secondary ends include assessing boredom in physical activity using the Bored of Sports Scale (BOSS) that tests 11 items via a 5-point Likert scale ranging between "strongly disagree" and "strongly agree", examining participants' motivation with regards to exercise through Behavioral Regulation in Exercise Questionnaire (BREQ-2), and evaluating motives for physical activity by administering Motives for Physical Activity Measure-Revised (MPAM-R)."
