Study Summary

This trial will measure the effect of a physical therapy intervention on ankle motion and gait for people with stroke.

Who is the study for?
This trial is for individuals who have had their first stroke and are in the subacute phase. They must be able to follow simple commands and have limited ankle movement (less than 5 degrees of dorsiflexion). People with muscle or ligament tears, recent sprains, skin wounds, joint fusion or hardware implants in the ankle, unexplained resting ankle pain, or fractures in the affected leg cannot participate.Check my eligibility
What is being tested?
The study tests if a single session of Grade III ankle mobilization combined with stretching, muscle activation training, and assisted gait can improve active range of motion and walking ability post-stroke. The effects will be measured before and after a 90-minute treatment to see how well it works.See study design
What are the potential side effects?
While not explicitly listed for this observational study on physical therapy interventions like joint mobilization, potential side effects may include temporary discomfort at the site of manipulation, swelling or stiffness around the treated area.

Study Objectives

Outcome measures can provide a clearer picture of what you can expect from a treatment.
Primary outcome measures
Active range of motion of the paretic ankle
Gait characteristic of: second double limb stance symmetry
Gait characteristic of: second double-limb stance time
+3 more
Secondary outcome measures
Subjective rating of perceived ability to walk

Trial Design

Experimental Treatment
Group I: InterventionExperimental Treatment1 Intervention
Pre-assessment of active and passive range of motion in the paretic ankle, and five strides of gait assessment on a pressure-sensitive mat. Intervention will be moderate grade III anterior-to-posterior directed ankle mobilization for 2 minutes while supine, ankle muscle stretch for 75 seconds in standing, ankle muscle training for 3 minutes while seated. Post-assessment is repeated in the same sequence and content as pre-assessment.

Is the age limit for enrollment in this experiment above 80 years of age?

"This research project is seeking patients aged between 21 and 86 years old. There are 68 studies available for persons above 65, as well as 7 studies that cater to individuals below 18 years of age."

Answered by AI

Am I a suitable candidate to join this investigation?

"Eligibility for this research project is contingent on having hemiparesis and falling within the range of 21 to 86 years old. Approximately 20 individuals can join the medical trial."

Answered by AI

Is this research endeavor currently seeking participants?

"As reported on clinicaltrials.gov, this particular trial is currently not recruiting patients. Despite originally being published in December of 2023 and most recently updated in October of the same year, other trials are actively registering participants with 74 presently accepting registrants."
