This trial will test whether teaching patients about pain and opioids before surgery can reduce postoperative pain and the amount of opioids needed.
Who is the study for?
This trial is for adults over 18 who are fluent in English, have a scheduled hip arthroplasty or colorectal surgery requiring an overnight hospital stay. They must be healthy enough for surgery (ASA status 1-4) and able to give informed consent. People using opioids daily for the past three months or those getting regional or epidural pain relief can't join.Check my eligibility

The study is testing if watching educational videos before surgery about managing pain and general perioperative care can reduce the need for opioid painkillers after surgery.See study design

This trial includes the following eligibility criteria:- I am 18 years old or older.I am scheduled for hip replacement or minimally invasive colorectal surgery.I am receiving or have received a regional block or epidural for pain.I have been using opioids daily for over a month at doses of 15 mg or more.My health is good enough for surgery, according to the ASA scale.I expect to stay in the hospital overnight after surgery.
