Study Summary

This trial is testing whether children with developmental language disorder (DLD) learn better when they have to frequently recall newly introduced words.

Who is the study for?
This trial is for four- and five-year-old children with developmental language disorder (DLD). They must have normal hearing, no neurological damage or disease, nonverbal intelligence scores above intellectual disability range, be native English speakers (bilinguals included), and not on the autism spectrum. Children should show a significant deficit in language ability.Check my eligibility

Group I: Retrieval practice during word learning: expanding scheduleExperimental Treatment1 Intervention
Each child will learn 8 novel nouns referring to unfamiliar plants and animals ("nepp") and a related "meaning" ("a nepp likes rain") . Four nouns will be learned in an expanding spaced retrieval practice condition; four will be learned in a "standard" spaced retrieval practice condition. In the "standard" spaced retrieval practice condition, the number of other words intervening between hearing the target and an attempt to retrieve it will increase from 0 to 3 words. In the expanding spaced retrieval practice condition, the number of other words intervening between hearing the target and an attempt to retrieve it will increase gradually from 0 to 1 to 3 words.
