Trial Summary

What is the purpose of this trial?

The goals of this study are to determine the (1) feasibility and (2) acceptability of the study procedures through a pilot randomized controlled trial of a values affirmation intervention targeting medication adherence in adults with heart failure enrolled in cardiac rehabilitation relative to usual care.

Do I have to stop taking my current medications for this trial?

The trial protocol does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications.

What data supports the idea that Values-Affirmation + Education for Heart Failure is an effective treatment?

The available research shows that educating patients about heart failure can improve their knowledge and involvement in managing their condition, which can lead to shorter hospital stays. Additionally, patient education is highlighted as a crucial part of heart failure therapy, aiming to enhance self-management and improve the disease's progression. Although the effectiveness of these educational programs is sometimes questioned due to a lack of detailed descriptions, the research suggests that structured education can positively impact patient behavior and knowledge.12345

What safety data is available for the Values-Affirmation + Education treatment for heart failure?

The provided research does not directly address safety data for the Values-Affirmation + Education treatment or its variants. The studies focus on adverse drug events, educational expectations, and the impact of educational interventions on heart failure patients, but do not specifically evaluate the safety of the Values-Affirmation + Education intervention.678910

Is the treatment Values Affirmation a promising treatment for heart failure?

Yes, Values Affirmation is a promising treatment for heart failure because it helps patients focus on their personal values, which can improve their self-care decisions and behaviors. This approach empowers patients by aligning their treatment with what they value most, potentially leading to better health outcomes.811121314

Findings from Research

Patient education about heart failure and its treatment is crucial for improving compliance, which directly impacts prognosis.
Implementing therapeutic education in community hospitals can enhance patient knowledge and involvement, leading to reduced hospitalization duration.
[Educating patients about heart failure in community hospitals: it is possible...].Jourdain, P., Funck, F., Bellorini, M., et al.[2017]
A review of 19 randomized controlled trials on therapeutic patient education for heart failure revealed that while major elements of program descriptions were present, critical information such as patients' educational needs and evaluation methods were often missing.
Improving the precision of program descriptions in future studies could enhance the effectiveness of therapeutic patient education for heart failure patients, suggesting a need for standardized reporting formats.
Therapeutic patient education in heart failure: do studies provide sufficient information about the educational programme?Albano, MG., Jourdain, P., De Andrade, V., et al.[2014]
A study found that heart failure patients generally lack essential knowledge for effective self-care, particularly regarding medications, weight monitoring, and understanding heart failure itself.
Despite older age and higher education correlating with better knowledge, overall awareness was low across all demographics, highlighting the need for innovative educational strategies by healthcare providers to improve patient self-care and health outcomes.
What do patients know about their heart failure?Artinian, NT., Magnan, M., Christian, W., et al.[2021]
