What You Need to Know Before You Apply

What is the purpose of this trial?

This trial aims to understand why teens vape and how their parents view vaping. Researchers will collect information through a survey on vaping habits, mood issues, and social influences. Teenagers and their parents can participate if the teens are between 13 and 18 years old and have vaped, used to vape, or have never vaped. Participants will answer the survey anonymously using their own device and might be invited to an 8-week mindfulness course (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, or MBSR). Those who complete the survey will receive $10, and resources for quitting vaping or handling stress will be provided. This unphased trial offers a unique opportunity to contribute to understanding vaping behaviors and their impact on teens and families.

Will I have to stop taking my current medications?

The trial does not specify whether you need to stop taking your current medications. It seems to be a survey-based study, so it's unlikely that you would need to change your medication routine.

What prior data suggests that this survey is safe for adolescents and their parents?

Research shows that mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) is generally safe for participants. Studies have found that mindfulness practices carry few risks. Over 200 studies have demonstrated that mindfulness therapy effectively reduces stress without major safety concerns. One study found that mindfulness can help lower blood pressure in people with high blood pressure, highlighting its positive effects.

While mindfulness is usually well-tolerated, its effects can vary among individuals. Notably, mindfulness practices are not linked to any significant harmful events. Overall, mindfulness-based programs are considered safe for most individuals.12345

Why are researchers excited about this trial?

Researchers are excited about exploring Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) as a way to address adolescent vaping because it offers a unique, non-pharmaceutical approach that focuses on mental well-being. Unlike traditional interventions that may involve medications or behavioral therapy, MBSR uses mindfulness techniques to reduce stress and increase self-awareness, which could help teens resist the urge to vape. This approach targets the underlying stress and behavioral triggers associated with vaping, potentially offering a holistic and sustainable way to reduce this habit.

What evidence suggests that Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction is effective for reducing stress in adolescents?

Research has shown that Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) effectively lowers stress, anxiety, and depression. One study examined over 200 cases and found that mindfulness therapy greatly reduced stress in healthy individuals. Another study discovered that participants in MBSR experienced immediate and lasting benefits, particularly in stress reduction. A clinical trial demonstrated that a short mindfulness course was both practical and effective in lowering work-related stress. This suggests that MBSR can help manage stress, which may benefit those dealing with stress-related issues, such as those linked to vaping.36789

Are You a Good Fit for This Trial?

Inclusion Criteria

Be an adolescent age 13-17, OR an adult who identifies as parenting an adolescent aged 13-17 whom they know/suspect is vaping. While we are including adolescents who do not vape in addition to those who do vape, we are only including parents of adolescents who do (or are suspected to) vape because it is this population that is most directly relevant to the upcoming MBSR study, and it is the attitudes of these parents that have most direct practical significance on adolescent vaping. All participants must be willing to complete the survey to the end.
